Building Data Teams: The Elusive 'Data Analytics Lead'

We worked on this role for 6 weeks before an offer was signed with the right person.
What did it take?
There was even a mid-point curveball; After 3 weeks we had an offer but the candidate declined (it happens).
What was our 9-step process for this role?
1. Position Screening
In-person, we sat down for an hour with the client and debriefed on the role and its requirements. We had a job description on file but questions that go beyond that include:
...potential growth opportunities within the company
...specific technical skills and experiences needed
...key performance indicators for the position
...team dynamics and company culture
...long-term vision and mission
This initial debriefing ensured we fully understood the client's expectations and could align our search accordingly.
2. Market Mapping
Next, we conducted extensive market mapping to identify where the best talent for this role might be. This involved analysing industry trends, identifying key competitors and pinpointing potential candidates who matched the client's requirements. Our market mapping included:

...Researching competitors and similar organisations

3. Sourcing Campaign
With our market map in hand, we launched a multi-channel sourcing campaign, utilising a variety of means to reach potential candidates:
From this we identified a pool of 51 candidates and over the whole process took 20 of them to internal interviews.
4. Internal Interviewing
These interviews allowed us to assess each candidate's fit for the role and the company. And also the candidate's interest in the role. Recruitment is like house-buying, except the house has to want the buyer as well. Our internal interviewing process included:

5. Technical Testing
Candidates who passed the internal interview stage were then put through a previously selected online SQL quiz. We utilised the same testing platform that Microsoft uses, CoderByte, to screen talent. This was previously discussed with the client. The test was hard...but it gave our client a benchmark on technical skill.
6. Client Online Interview
Following technical testing, we submitted top candidates for client online interviews. These sessions allowed the client to interact with the candidates and further assess their suitability. The online interview process included:
...Structured interview questions aligned with the job requirements
...Discussion of past projects and relevant experiences

7. Client Face-to-Face Interview
From the online interviews, 5 candidates were selected for face-to-face interviews with the client. These in-depth interviews provided an opportunity for both the client and candidates to engage in detailed discussions. This stage involved:
....Cultural fit assessment through informal conversations and team interactions
...In-person evaluation of interpersonal and communication skills
...Detailed technical and behavioural questions
8. Offer, Negotiation & Due Diligences
After the face-to-face interviews, the client extended offers to 2 top candidates. During this phase, we conducted thorough due diligence to ensure both parties were fully informed and satisfied. This included:

Finally, after a comprehensive and meticulous process, 1 candidate accepted the offer, marking a successful placement. This was not without its challenges; we faced a mid-point curveball when a candidate declined an offer after 3 weeks.
Nevertheless, the search was fruitful and we found the match!
