Building Control Professionals: CABE Membership Survey 2024 Results

Building Control Professionals: CABE Membership Survey 2024 Results

As part of CABE’s continuous mission to engage with and further understand its members’ concerns, the Association carried out its second building control survey with members in England and Wales in January 2024.

At the time of this survey, the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) had been implemented, the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) had been delegated authority over the new regime of building control inspector (BCI) registration and the deadline for all BCIs to register with the BSR was 6 April 2024.

More than 400 members took part and CABE can now share a summary of the results:

  • 83% of respondents are intending to register as a Building Control Inspector
  • 89% are currently working in the building control profession
  • 38% of respondents feel generally prepared to provide services themselves in line with the new requirements set out in the BSA.

The survey allowed CABE to compare outcomes against the 2022 Building Control Survey, which revealed an increase of 14% in those working in local authority building control and a 14% decrease in Approved Inspectors.

The comparison also showed that respondents feel resourcing for building control functions remains on the decline, with 86% agreeing compared to 82% in 2022.

On a positive note, 65% of respondents feel supported by their employer, and 72% have their professional memberships paid for, either in full or in part, by their employer, which has increased slightly (4%) since 2022.
