Building Connections In Data: Hannah Watson On The Power Of DataMornings
The data industry is evolving, but one thing remains clear: representation matters.
Women in tech and data are still navigating challenges when it comes to visibility and career progression, making spaces for connection and support more important than ever.
At Humanised Group , we’ve seen firsthand how strong networks can empower professionals and open doors. That’s why ahead of International Women's Day, we sat down with Hannah Watson - Data Analytics & AI recruitment specialist and the driving force behind DataMornings, a community dedicated to elevating women in data across Brisbane. We talked about the power of networking, career advice for women in tech, and what still needs to change to create a more inclusive industry.
You’ve built a career in tech recruitment while also leading DataMornings, a community for Brisbane’s women in data. What inspired you to start DataMornings, and what impact have you seen so far?
"DataMornings was created to provide a space for professionals to share and grow, specifically to elevate women working in data across Brisbane. The impact of meeting others across different domains in a casual setting is significant, as it allows for connections that might not have happened otherwise. These relationships can lead to knowledge sharing, mentorship, and opportunities that help women in their careers."
Women in data and tech still face challenges when it comes to representation and career progression. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to women looking to break into or advance in the industry?
"Build a strong network and don’t hesitate to put yourself forward for opportunities, even if you don’t tick every box. Confidence, visibility, attitude and capability are factors that will assist in moving you forward."

Through your role at Humanised Group, you’ve worked with countless data professionals. What’s one common trait or skill that makes someone truly stand out in this space?
"Everyone is different and have unique traits as there are many roles within Data - you need all types for a well rounded team! The common theme for standout individuals I’ve encountered, combine technical expertise with curiosity, they are problem solvers who tend to be highly analytical, these people ask the right questions and are able to communicate and showcase what data can do back to the businesses at a pace that makes sense for the maturity of that particular organisation."
International Women’s Day is all about celebrating progress while recognising the work still to be done. What’s one change you’d love to see in the data industry to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women?
"I truly believe the Data Community in Brisbane as a whole (not just women) is amazing and does give support to each other. There has been a lot of progress in recent times and people want to see success based on merit. Equal representation is key! From the top: I have seen more Women in leadership roles across the data industry which is promising, representation at the top helps pave the way for others. From the bottom: We should look to back further programs that promote subject like technology, math etc to younger females. Bring in the woman leaders to tell their stories and in doing so show what opportunities could look like in the workplace."
For anyone thinking about attending a DataMornings event, what can they expect – and why is it so important for women in data to have these kinds of spaces?
"DataMornings is all real conversations over coffee: expect a relaxed, supportive environment where you can connect with women working in this space. Spaces like this matter because community and representation play a huge role in career growth."
