Building a Community is Like Making Gumbo—Here’s How
Hey Money Makers,
This Black History Month, I had the honor of delivering a keynote on something deeply important—building a strong community. And you know what? It’s a lot like making a pot of gumbo.
The Right Ingredients for a Thriving Community
Just like you can’t make good gumbo without the right mix of spices, meats, and veggies, you can’t build a strong community without the right mix of people, opportunities, and resources.
1?? People – The Mentors & Teachers
Every great dish starts with a solid base—just like mentors, teachers, and leaders are the foundation of any strong community. These are the people who guide, inspire, and push us toward success.
2?? Opportunities – Jobs, Internships & Small Businesses
Opportunities are the seasoning—the thing that gives your community real flavor. Without access to jobs, internships, and support for small businesses, people struggle to grow. But when we create pathways for success, the entire community wins.
3?? Resources – Support Systems & Giveaways
No matter how good your ingredients are, every gumbo needs broth—it holds everything together. In a community, resources like food banks, school supplies, scholarships, and mentorship programs ensure that no one gets left behind.
The Power of Community in Action
Let me tell you a quick story…
One of our Young Billionaires Club students faced a challenge many young people experience—limited access to opportunities. After school, instead of going home to distractions, this student took the Metro bus to the YBC Thrift Store just to attend our programming.
Why?
Because they found a place where people believed in them, gave them opportunities, and provided resources to help them grow. That’s community. That’s what happens when we build something bigger than ourselves.
So, What’s in YOUR Gumbo?
