Finding Lucky Numbers and Building Community?
Mitch and Keith began their discussion by jokingly sharing their "lucky numbers," a playful nod to the magic of manifestation. However, they quickly transitioned to a more serious topic: the necessity of surrounding ourselves with people who uplift and inspire us.
Mitch emphasized that community is vital, especially for those of us striving to break free from maladaptive behavioral patterns. The path to healing and growth often starts with the people we choose to engage with. But how do we find these supportive individuals?
The Journey to Finding Your Community?
Mitch shared his own journey of navigating the community after leaving a structured environment, such as the church, where he initially found support. He highlighted the importance of pursuing interests and hobbies as a means to connect with others. Platforms like Meetup can help us discover local groups focused on everything from book clubs to music and meditation.
Finding common ground fosters an instant connection, making it easier to establish relationships. Mitch's experience in a public speaking group illustrates this point. Despite differences in age and background, his son found a supportive community that enriched his life.
Vulnerability: The Key to Connection
However, community building goes beyond shared interests; it requires vulnerability. Many men struggle with opening up emotionally, which can hinder their ability to forge meaningful connections. Mitch reminded us that vulnerability can feel dangerous, but it’s essential for authentic relationships.
Creating a safe space where we can be ourselves is crucial. When we share our passions and vulnerabilities, we pave the way for deeper connections.
Intentionality in Building Community
Both Mitch and Dr. Keith recognized that building community takes intentional effort, especially as we grow older, and our lives become busier. The challenge lies in finding like-minded individuals who are not only willing to share their interests but also create a space for vulnerability and support.
Many individuals feel isolated in today's digital age, mistaking social media connections for real community. While online relationships can be valuable, they often lack the depth of genuine, in-person interactions.
Conclusion: The Power of Community
As we wrap up this enlightening conversation, it’s clear that building a supportive community is essential for our mental health and overall well-being. By embracing our interests, being vulnerable, and actively seeking connections, we can create a network of support that enriches our lives.
Let’s remember to reach out, build connections, and nurture our communities. Whether through hobbies, support groups, or simply engaging with those around us, the journey to finding our tribe can lead to profound personal growth and fulfillment.
Thank you for joining us in this important discussion. We hope you feel inspired to seek out your own community and make meaningful connections. Until next time, take care of yourselves and each other!

Suicide Survivor
As you know, I am training to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2026. This is called a thru-hike because I intend to hike the entire trail northbound from Springer Mountain, Georgia,, to Katahdin, Maine. Please consider supporting the hike through my GoFundMe page.

As a five-time suicide attempt survivor, I recognize the importance of human connection. When I wanted to die by suicide, I had no one to turn to, to trust in, or tell my story to. This is a lonely experience . . . an experience no one should go through. My mission is to have the conversations . . . and to change the conversation . . . so we are connected and feel validated for our own feelings.
Your Story Matters
If you have made the attempt to end your life, let’s talk. I would like the opportunity to share your story with the world. If you have been left in the wake of someone who has died by suicide, please share your story with me as well.
And if you are still grieving the loss of someone close to you who ended their own life, I know people who can help.
