Ever wondered how a small-town initiative can spark major change?
On a recent episode of Tea with the Queen, I was joined by Bel Temby, one of the co-founders of the Wilderness Collective – an organisation dedicated to community rejuvenation through entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development. Bel has a remarkable story to tell, and I can't wait for you to hear it.
So, what exactly is the Wilderness Collective?
It's an initiative founded by Bel alongside four visionary women from Mallacoota. This organisation focuses on rejuvenating its community through entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development.
Their mission is to support local business development, promote job security, and foster a collaborative environment where creativity and business growth can flourish.
To achieve this mission, they have created a hub in Mallacoota that serves as a venue for workshops, networking sessions and events aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs as well as a coworking space. Their vision extends to economic revitalisation and community resilience, aiming to boost the local economy and enhance social connections.
Curious about the backstory, I asked Bel what caused the founders to create The Wilderness Collective. She shared that it started in the aftermath of the devastating Black Summer bushfires when two of the co-founders identified the need for a central gathering place in Mallacoota.? They envisioned a space where entrepreneurs could thrive, and this passion attracted the other co-founders to complete the team.
As a female-founded organisation, the Wilderness Collective places emphasis on supporting women in Mallacoota, although it is not exclusively for them.
They’ve identified unique challenges that women living remotely face, like limited career opportunities, and a lack of access to professional networks or business education.
The Wilderness Collective aims to address these issues by offering programs that support women in entrepreneurship and career development, helping them unlock new opportunities beyond the traditional job market.
Looking ahead, the Wilderness Collective has ambitious plans. The next big step is to purchase the building they currently lease so they can continue their work for decades and make lasting changes in Mallacoota.
They also plan to expand their offerings, providing more specialised training, mentorship, and support for local entrepreneurs.
Initiatives such as micro business incubators are in the pipeline to help people achieve sustainable incomes, regardless of the size of their ventures.
The Wilderness Collective is currently in stage three of its fundraising efforts, seeking business sponsorships, partnerships, and donations to secure the building.
