Building Communities From he Bottom Up

Building Communities From he Bottom Up

Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) is a growing movement that considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development.

Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, asset-based community development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.

Asset-based community development (ABCD) differs from needs-based community development in that it focuses primarily on homing and leveraging existing strengths within a community rather than bolstering community deficiencies through institutional intervention.

The ABCD approach believes that solutions to community problems already exist within a community’s assets.

One of the leading advocates of this approach in the UK is Cormac Russell whom through his organisation Nuture Development works with communities and agencies to build from the bottom up to release the potential of community assets.

Listen here to Cormac explaining the value of asset based community development.

Personal experience in community engagement has witnessed much red tape, bureaucracy and even accusations of being 'capitalist' for attempting to set up a fundraiser at a local organisation! In order to engage efficiently there needs to be less restrictions, more understanding and increased levels of genuine commitment to community values. I wholeheartedly support the intention behind asset based community development (and working on a business plan just now for a creative project). Thank you Cormac and Francis Sealey, great news!
