Building Cohesive Teams

Have you ever found yourself amidst cross-functional teams within your organization, where each team operates as if in its own silo, detached from the broader organizational objectives?

This scenario is all too common in today's fast-paced work environments, especially amid industry transformations and lean workforces. Teams often focus solely on their individual goals, overlooking the broader impact and failing to communicate effectively with other departments. This breakdown in communication not only fosters mistrust but also hampers collaboration and results in suboptimal outcomes.

I've encountered this challenge firsthand numerous times. It wasn't until I delved into Patrick Lencioni's insightful book, "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," that I grasped the gravity of the issue and identified actionable solutions. Lencioni's framework illuminated the root causes of team dysfunction and provided a roadmap to cultivate cohesion within teams.

The five dysfunctions outlined by Lencioni are as follows:

1. Absence of Trust: Team members hesitate to be vulnerable with one another.

2. Fear of Conflict: Avoidance of healthy debate stifles open communication.

3. Lack of Commitment: Unclear goals or a lack of buy-in results in tepid efforts.

4. Avoidance of Accountability: Teammates shy away from holding each other to high standards.

5. Inattention to Results: Individual agendas overshadow collective objectives.

By addressing these dysfunctions, teams can foster trust, enhance communication, and cultivate a shared commitment to achieving results.

You don't need to hold a top leadership position to initiate change. Start within your immediate team or collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to implement Lencioni's principles. The key lies in fostering open dialogue, setting clear goals, and holding each other accountable.

Here's a glimpse into how we applied Lencioni's framework within our mid-management cross-functional team:

1. Reintroduction: Each team member delivered a brief presentation reintroducing themselves, fostering a sense of openness and vulnerability.

2. Goal Setting and Issue Addressing: Team members articulated their specific goals and fearlessly addressed existing issues within the team.

3. Defining a Common Goal: Through constructive dialogue, we identified a singular goal that resonated with each team member, fostering alignment and commitment.

4. Pledging Commitment: We crafted an action plan outlining how we would hold ourselves accountable and ensure progress towards our shared goal.

These sessions, conducted over two half-day sessions, proved transformative. By fostering trust, setting clear goals, and committing to accountability, we transitioned from working in silos to collaborating effectively towards a common objective.

Every organization can benefit from cultivating cohesive teams that prioritize collaboration and results. I wholeheartedly recommend integrating Lencioni's principles into team development initiatives, as they have the power to unlock the full potential of every team member and drive collective success. This book should be in the tool kit of every leader. Here are links of where you can find your copy.
