Building a Career Aligned with Purpose

Building a Career Aligned with Purpose

On Tuesday at Vantage Points Foundation, we spoke to Sharon Bell , CEO at Services for Education, about the topic 'Your Career and Purpose'. Sharon's professional journey, marked by a transition from finance to her current leadership role, stands as a testament to the dynamic evolution of purpose throughout a career.

Her early career in finance provided a foundation, but it was the realisation that she didn't want to remain in accountancy that sparked her journey of self-discovery. Sharon's career trajectory took a meaningful turn when she entered the field of education. Here, she found her purpose: building up others.

Sharon emphasised the importance of recognising that purpose is not a static entity; it transforms over time. This can be facilitated by intentional practices, but can also happen unconsiously. To help guide her journey towards further clarifying her purpose, Sharon encourages the practice of selecting a guiding word for the year. Her word for this year has been 'curiosity', which she has used to guide her decision making and shape her perspective and actions.

Identifying activities that resonate and energise is crucial. These are the moments when you find yourself seamlessly 'in the flow' of your purpose. Reflecting on emotional responses, whether passion, anger, or joy, can illuminate your own personal values and unveil aspects that are genuinely significant. Seeking external perspectives through personality profiles and feedback from friends can also provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas of impact.

Sharon described the evolution of purpose over time, as a process of crystallisation and strengthening. Purpose isn't an idea that undergoes radical changes but adapts, evolving in tandem with personal growth and experiences.

The delicate interplay between purpose and wellbeing emerged as a focal point. Sharon acknowledged the societal pressure to be purpose-led and its potential impact on wellbeing. Striking a balance is crucial to prevent it from becoming an overwhelming 24/7 preoccupation. To maintain a healthy approach, Sharon emphasised the importance of breaks and safe spaces to switch off. It's essential not to succumb to the pressure of being and doing everything.

Sharon proposed a shift in perspective from 'What is my purpose?' to 'When am I being most me?' to help step away from the societal pressure of identifying and verbalising purpose, and using the activities that you feel most drawn to and enjoy to continue the unconscious journey towards finding your purpose.

In conclusion, Sharon's journey and insights underscore the dynamic nature of purpose and its impact on both career satisfaction and personal wellbeing. As you navigate your own path, you will become more aware of your purpose as your guiding compass, evolving with each intentional and unintentional step taken towards authentic self-discovery and fulfilment. ??

Resources and advice:

  • Answer the question 'What clues point to your purpose?', and put this in an email to yourself scheduled in for six months time. You can then add to this and see which areas of your life reflect this purpose and which don’t. You will also be able to see where your purpose has developed.
  • The personality test, www.findmywhy.com, was recommended by one of our young women during the conversation about purpose. This resource is tailored specifically to early careers, providing a structured way to understand strengths and areas of impact.
  • Book recommendation: 'How to Lead a Quest' by Jason Fox. A resource delving into the exploration of making a difference in the world.
