Building Capacity into Competency...

All of us have the capacity for social and emotional learning but without an environment that provides "hands on" experiences (experiential learning) to learn, practice, and master related skills; developing social and emotional competency can prove illusive.

In the upcoming series of articles, I will examine application methods and a theoretical framework for fostering social and emotional competencies in young people today. This series of articles will discuss:

  1. a history of social and emotional learning|
  2. theoretical framework
  3. ingredients for learning, practicing, and mastering social and emotional learning (the "Marinade")
  4. principles in intervention/education: thoughtful, reasonable, kind, and sincere (TRKS)
  5. barriers to learning (emotional dysregulation, "every good intention"
  6. implications for practice in education, children's mental health, restorative justice, and corrections
  7. successful brain development/youth development
