Building Bridges Across Differences: Abdi Ali’s Journey
Mediation Center
Mediation Center has a long standing reputation for excellence in conflict resolution training and services.
Abdi Ali’s work is rooted in community engagement and dispute resolution. As the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Multicultural Mediation, headquartered in Minneapolis, Abdi works with Somali and East African immigrant and refugee populations, helping them navigate workplace conflicts, family disputes, and cultural misunderstandings. His role requires him to bridge the gap between diverse cultural perspectives while guiding conversations toward resolution.
Recognizing that his work could benefit from a more structured conflict resolution framework, Abdi enrolled in Mediation Center ’s training. The experience equipped him with practical tools and techniques that have transformed how he approaches difficult conversations in both community and family settings.
Discovering the Value of Mediation
Abdi’s goal was to build skills for facilitating tough conversations with the communities he serves. “The training gave me the structure I needed,” he explains. “I’ve learned to resolve disputes in group settings, at work, and with families.”
Abdi works with people from diverse cultural backgrounds where conflicts often stem from misunderstandings. "The trainers were well-experienced and gave real-life examples I could relate to and culturally understand," he recalls. This insight allowed him to immediately apply what he learned to real-world situations.
Practical Tools for Every Setting
The training gave Abdi essential tools to manage challenging conversations. "When mediation is stuck, staying focused is crucial," he says. “That’s something I’ve learned to rely on a lot.”
In his role, Abdi facilitates workplace discussions among colleagues with different cultural backgrounds and resolves family disputes within immigrant communities. The training provided practical tools to guide these conversations with empathy and neutrality. “The training taught me when to push and when to step back, which has been invaluable.”
Staying Grounded and Culturally Aware
One of the most powerful takeaways for Abdi was learning to stay calm and neutral during emotionally charged discussions. "[The training] helps you center yourself and keep the conversation moving forward," he explains.
He also emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity in his work. “Many conflicts I encounter come from misunderstandings rooted in cultural differences. The training gave me the ability to facilitate these conversations without making assumptions and guide people toward mutual understanding.”

A Recommendation for Every Professional
Abdi believes any professional working with people can benefit from mediation training. “Even if you’re not a mediator, these skills are essential,” he says. "Knowing how to listen deeply, guide conversations, and help people communicate better can improve any profession—and even personal relationships."
He especially recommends the training to those in social services or community work, saying, “It gives you the tools to approach conflict with confidence, whether in work, family, or group settings.”
Moving Forward with Purpose
Abdi continues to apply what he learned to build trust and foster open dialogue in the communities he serves. “The Mediation Center gave me the skills to be a better listener, a better facilitator, and a better person.”
Through his work with immigrant and refugee families, Abdi is creating spaces for connection and resolution, helping others find common ground.
