The ultimate goal of any organization is to achieve excellence and sustain it. A sequence of steps need to be followed to achieve this. These are described as Building Blocks Of Excellence. Let us briefly SWIM through the WAVES to get a very cursory understanding of the same.
WAVE 1: This is the initial exploratory stage where we tidentify problem areas through a variety of tools and practices. The main focus is on understanding the concept of waste, making small corrections, creating awareness of waste among all starting from the top till the very bottom in the hierarchy.
WAVE 2: This is where we build the foundation for our Lean Journey. Once the thought process is established in Wave 1, we move towards setting up standards, visual monitoring methods, making small improvements in areas that manifest obvious faults and defining various metrics that need to be studied on a continual basis.
WAVE 3: At this stage, we expand our thoughts and activities. We begin using more sophisticated methods (tools) and go deeper in our study and analysis. A number of formal processes and documentation are introduced and practised.
WAVE 4: This is a period of integration and reinforcement of the foundation already set up in the previous steps. Through sophisticated methods, improvement projects are designed and implemented so that a major impact on the organization is effected.
WAVE 5: At this point, the organization would have broken through the phases of uncertainty and resistance. Teams operating various tools and processes would have reached a level of clarity and stability so that the organization can focus on strategic thinking of building momentum for seamless growth.
In my next post, I will share some thoughts on constantly changing customer expectations and how a better understanding of customers can help build our business.
