Building Better Tools: How Nurse Input Can Shape the Future of Healthcare Tech

Listen up, nurses! Tech is transforming healthcare, but let's be real: it's not magic. To make it work, we need our magic touch - that nurse expertise that keeps the whole shebang running.

Why? Well, we're the frontline army. We see the struggles, the triumphs, the messy magic of care firsthand. We know what works, what doesn't, and what tech could make our lives (and our patients') a whole lot easier.

But guess what? Too often, we're left out of the tech party. We end up using clunky systems designed by folks who haven't walked in our shoes (or worn those oh-so-comfy scrubs). Result? Frustration, wasted time, and sometimes, even worse care.

That's gotta change. We need to be in the driver's seat, shaping tech from the ground up. Imagine:

  • EMRs that don't steal our time, letting us focus on what matters most - our patients.
  • Apps that empower patients, taking the mystery out of care and making them partners in their health.
  • Wearables that keep tabs on vitals, freeing us up for the human touch that tech can't replace.

This isn't just about making our lives easier (though hey, who wouldn't love that?). It's about creating a better healthcare system for everyone. Nurse-led tech can:

  • Reduce errors. Say goodbye to those pesky typos and missed orders!
  • Boost communication. Doctors, nurses, patients - everyone on the same page, thanks to tech that talks.
  • Keep costs down. No more wasted time wrestling with buggy software.
  • Tackle global health challenges. From aging populations to chronic diseases, we can use tech to reach more people and deliver better care.

But how do we make this happen? It's time to:

  • Break down the barriers. Let's educate and empower nurses to be tech innovators, not just users.
  • Get everyone on board. Doctors, researchers, developers, heck, even the cafeteria lady - we all need to hear the nurse's voice.
  • Shout our successes from the rooftops! Show the world what nurses can do when they're equipped with the right tools.

Here's your call to action:

  • Share this article. Spread the word like wildfire!
  • Support nurse-led innovation. Fund projects, mentor the next generation of nurse-techies.
  • Celebrate the nurse tech rock-stars. Let's give them the recognition they deserve!

Together, we can build a future where nurse-powered tech makes healthcare better for everyone. So grab your stethoscopes, your laptops, and your passion for innovation, nurses! The future of healthcare needs us at the helm.

Let's get to work!

I support your vision for nurse-led innovation and technology designed "for nursing's sake" rather than merely checking a box. The wider conversation should include prioritizing self-care and exploring emerging technologies purposefully designed for holistic nurse wellbeing. Such as mindfulness apps, to air-purifying respirator helmets, to regenerative solutions. When we nurture ourselves first, we are better equipped to participate as leaders in the inevitable technology shifts ahead. Nurses are truly change makers and as we unite we can truly become a force that can transform healthcare for good.

Nurse buy-in can help advance and improve technology. They’re the primary customers & should be first on all quality metrics.

One important thing is, nurses have for a long time given the opportunity of decision making to other professionals in the health system. We are the first to complain and the last to act. Is high time nursing leadership and self driven individual to take the Lead in tech in order to provide safe and holistic care to your patients.

Thank you for sharing this article! I agree that nurses have tremendous responsibility to their patients and must be involved in shaping the future of technology in healthcare. Being involved with SONSIEL - Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders I have been fortunate to meet several amazing nurse innovators and inventors as well as witness many in the making during hackathons, pitch-a-thons and other innovative events!
