"Building a Better Mousetrap"

 Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door!!

Err, no!

You can have the best mousetrap in the entire universe but what if:

  1. nobody’s troubled by mice?
  2. they ARE troubled by mice but nobody knows about your mousetrap?
  3. they are troubled by mice but your mousetrap is unaffordable (or otherwise undesirable)?

If any of the above is true, the result is ZERO SALES of your product or service.

In a short article (and my aim is for this to b e a pithy read) I can only give you brief, “scratching the surface” answers. Here goes:

  1. Either switch your business focus to address an existing need or create one, if you can
  2. Create or improve your marketing campaign
  3. Revisit your offer and, if you need to, your entire production process.

Behind all of these short answers lies a process. That’s the process of PLANNING. Each stage of your business requires careful, considered, short, medium and long-term planning. Even if your business has grown organically, as many have, it’s NEVER, EVER too late to start planning.

Short, medium and long-term plans differ, of course, as does HOW to plan, based on the situation and environment you’re in, but the fundamentals remain.
