Pre pandemic few people questioned the need for a 2 hour commute to work or the prospect of having day after day of a miserable life created by toxic managers, clique based cultures and timed toilet breaks. A pre pandemic study in 2019 of 40,000 of employees at 125 companies stated that 80% believed their manager had no idea how their power influenced workplace interactions, such as isolating people the manager doesn’t like, or not reporting harassment for fear of job loss, and 29% stated they left previous employment due to workplace conflict (https://emtrain.com/workplace-culture-insights/ ) and although 80% would appreciate empathy from leadership, only 40% ever saw it practiced.
After 18 months of illness, death, fear and global misery, is it any wonder many people don’t want to return to this toxic workplace nonsense and would sooner look for a new job and a better way to live our one life, than a return to the day to day workplace hell that was working life before 2020? – enough of the misery already, companies can fix these toxic issues and save enough money in replacement recruitment costs to keep all hardworking and dedicated staff and hire the best talent with improved brand image and better levels of attraction and retention.
Building a better life experience to get employees back to the office is seen as the next step for employers to encourage a happy and productive return to the office as compulsory work from home measures are eased and removed in the coming weeks and months.
Building better life experiences isn’t just about perks such as flexitime, hotdesking, free coffee and pool tables, in the office space it all starts with the human interactions – the team – both the organization as one big team and the channel teams such as Sales, marketing, operations, leadership and so on. A good mix of facilitation for team work, collaboration, communication and strong measures to ensure diversity, skills, respect, culture alignment and a sense of belonging and inclusion with opportunities to be positively challenged for personal and career growth rather than punishment and marginalization threats.
The employee lifecycle starts with the hiring process and this needs to take into account many factors and not source candidates from the same pool of LinkedIn jobs ads, not settle for those that are actively seeking and replying to every job but find the right talent from many possible sources where successful talent can be found, constant communication and feedback to all applicants and keep long term engagement with unsuccessful but nonetheless good applicants to make future hiring even smoother.
The ideal process makes identifying the right sources and engaging them less labour and time intensive to quickly build a list which can them be scored and ranked based on Job fit, skills and team culture fit, with methods to identify the likelihood to succeed and for retention and help remove the many unconscious biases during the early stages of sourcing and prescreening so the best talent has a chance to be seen as contenders before age, gender, race and religion and many other biases get in the way.
