Building Better Health
The American health care system is broken.
Across the country, too many of our neighbors struggle to get access to quality and affordable health care. Too many are forced to make the difficult decision between feeding their families or paying for medicine.
The data paints a clear picture. In a recent KFF poll, about half of U.S. adults said it is difficult to afford health care, and one in four said either they or a family member struggled to pay for health care in the last year.
In Florida and in Puerto Rico – where two of GuideWell ’s largest businesses operate – the health care system is being further challenged by an aging population.
Within the next five years, more than one-fifth of the U.S. population will be over 65. In both Florida and Puerto Rico, we’re already there. An older population translates to an increased need for health care services.
In Puerto Rico, the island’s aging population is suffering the consequences of outdated Medicare policies, compounded by a shortage of doctors and hospital beds.
We all deserve better.
I believe we can fix the challenges that plague our health care system. We can create a better system that meets the needs of our diverse population. But no single organization can do it alone. It will take all of us, working together.

That’s why we built a health solutions organization driven by our mission of helping people and communities achieve better health.
You can see how we are bringing that mission to life within our third annual Impact Report , which highlights the progress we’ve made toward delivering quality health care for the people and communities we serve, and our company’s commitment to serving as a force for good.
What makes me most proud is that this report isn’t only ours. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and what can happen when we partner across the industry and beyond the traditional health care system: insurers, providers, community organizations, drug manufacturers, and even residents – working in tandem toward a common goal.
At the heart and soul of our approach is this idea of creating better health together, and that prompted us to create a space to have “Healthy Conversations.” Let’s use this space to identify the most pressing challenges facing our health care system, our communities, our world, and let’s come together to talk about it, ideate, and implement sustainable solutions.
Where do you see the biggest opportunities for collaboration to improve health outcomes? Let me know what conversations you think we should be having in the comments and let’s start building a better health care system together.

1 周I am struck by the incredibly low reimbursements that BCBS of Florida pays Primary Care physicians for cognitive services. The rates do not support healthy primary care enterprises. If better access is required then BCBS and other payers need to consider how primary care physicians are paid. I believe that BCBS has some of the lowest payment rates in the Florida market. I don’t expect anyone from Florida BCBS to acknowledge the problem or address it.

2 个月Hi Pat, Anchoring around ‘whole person’ health is such a critical cornerstone, and one I’ve seen evolve rapidly in the last 5 years.? One driver is the proliferation of new / newly extensible technology, surfacing personally precise data in real time, to; guide action, drive outcomes & facilitate acute or preventative intervention.?We can step function how we treat the whole person, if we start with real time vis to that individual’s whole person (or a population’s) health state, 24/7. ‘An’ example (where I happen to be focused currently with some of the GuideWell team), is the use of CGMs (beyond those dosing insulin) + AI + wearable data, to expose where (in this case) lifestyle & metabolic disease intersect for a unique patient, and then guide behavior changes & outcomes through AI (pulling them out of Type II, pre-diabetes, obesity, etc.).?As mass consumer access to technologies accelerates, like CGM’s - Abbot & Dexcom/Signos just announced OTC versions - we can facilitate whole person health from ‘the inside out’ vs programmatically treating from the ‘outside in’. Love to hear others’ perspectives on how this evolution can enhance whole person health, but from a uniquely individual perspective – because we now can.
