Building An Afrikan Startup - BuilderSpace_
I’ve often considered myself the "unlucky founder." Despite having revenue and creating superb products, breaking into accelerator programs has always been a challenge, the processes, bureaucracy and military grade vetting criteria, wacha tu. Raising even a modest $20K took what felt like an eternity, at some point, I started thinking "Someone should be paying me to pitch, it had become a job".
I remember using my earnings from Uber bicycle deliveries just to fund a beautiful product, only to realize later that I’d been selling to the wrong customer for months. (Chest Pains)
These aren’t just my problems; they’re challenges that many local founders in Nairobi face daily. They are some of the top reasons why founders take so long to get to market. Honestly, it breaks my heart to see resources being directed the wrong way, day in and day out while founders, genuine people, continue to struggle to build a future for themselves and the continent. The number of great ideas that never get launched here is staggering.
A year ago, fueled by frustration and a desire for change, I shared my story on X. Tweeps, filled my DMs with love and support. A few months later, I did the same here (LinkedIn), and that’s when Nzisa Kiilu came across it. It turns out we had been dreaming the same dream in our separate worlds: to build a founder-focused, community-driven innovation hub—a builders space.
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to BuilderSpace located in Nairobi. This isn't just an innovation hub; it’s a vibrant community designed to provide founders, indie creators, and techies with access to essential resources and the freedom to do what they do best.
