Who brings you energy?

Who are you excited to be around?

These are crucial questions to ask when building a $1M community because they guide you to the first—and most important—step: defining Your Ideal Member.

Here’s the formula: Start by identifying who you’d be thrilled to bring together and help in ways they haven’t even considered yet.

Human Beings in Transition

The people who join paid communities, buy courses, and participate in events have one thing in common—they are in transition.

Focusing on people in transition is key because those who are content with where they are won’t be motivated to join your community, let alone invest in it. Your community should attract those eager to move from where they are to where they want to be.

When given the choice between sitting alone with a course or joining a vibrant community that’s on the same journey, most people will choose the latter.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Take the Slow AF Run Club, a paid membership on Mighty for new, "back-of-the-pack" runners who are nervous about reaching their goals. They’re searching for training knowledge while navigating ambition and isolation.

Their transition? They’re aiming to complete their first race and want to be part of a community of runners who share similar experiences and values.

When you create a space that brings these people together, you create something magical.

Get Specific

It’s tempting to be inclusive and serve everyone, but a community that tries to serve everyone ends up serving no one. You need to get specific about your Ideal Member to bring together a core group that can truly benefit from each other.

Now, It’s Your Turn

Now it’s your turn to define your Ideal Member. Focus on helping someone in transition and be as specific as possible.

Here are some questions to reflect on:

• Who are you most excited to help?
• What type of person can you help achieve the best results? What does their before and after look like?
• Why is this person looking for community? What will they gain from joining yours?
