Build Your Professional Reputation on LinkedIn: Strategies That Worked for Me

Early in my career, I realised how important a strong professional network is. I used LinkedIn not just as a social media site but as a platform to connect with others and open up new opportunities

Initially, I was overwhelmed by its vast features, but I soon learned how to use LinkedIn to show what I can do, connect with industry experts, and prove my value to potential employers and collaborators.

Here's how I approach LinkedIn to make it work for me and how you can make it work for you to attract opportunities and clients.

1. Optimise My Profile

I started by creating a complete profile, what LinkedIn calls an ‘All-Star’ profile.

I have a professional photo, a compelling headline that clearly states my value proposition, and an About section that highlights my skills, experiences, and offerings. I also ensure my work history is detailed and up-to-date.

2. Share Relevant Content

I post articles, updates, and insights related to my LinkedIn Consultancy and Coaching offerings.

This shows my expertise and keeps my network engaged. I aim for consistency and relevance in my posts. Although I post daily, you need to find the level of consistency that works for you and commit to it, that’s the key part.

3. Engage with My Network

I comment on posts and join discussions. Engaging with my connections helps build relationships and visibility.

Commenting on LinkedIn is extremely powerful, the LinkedIn algorithm may restrict your content visibility, but it can’t do so when it comes to commenting.

4. Request Recommendations

I ask colleagues and clients for recommendations. These testimonials help build trust and show my strengths from another person’s perspective

Social proof is a top driver for converting a prospect into a client.

5. Follow Industry Leaders

I keep up with industry trends by following leaders and influencers. Engaging with their content helps me stay informed and show my interest in the latest developments.

6. Publish Articles

I write at least one article per week about my expertise. This not only highlights my knowledge but also provides valuable information to my network.

7. Utilise LinkedIn Learning

I take courses on LinkedIn Learning on a monthly basis to acquire new skills and add these certifications to my profile. This demonstrates my commitment to continuous learning.
