Your personal brand is your identity. You already have a brand whether you work on it or not. It is your choice to build personal brand deliberately or continue with existing brand. The myth of personal branding is that it is about self-obsession whereas it is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. While previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal-branding concept suggests that success comes from self-packaging. To be a brand means to practice similar branding strategies that companies follow for their products and services.
Another myth about Personal branding is that it is essential only for working professionals conversely it is also important for each student, professional or stay at home folks since you are always judged by others. You can be a job seeker, an entrepreneur, leader, doctor, teacher or lawyer, you need to know your target audience and build your brand. Personal branding is a continuous process as you keep on growing from one phase to another and accordingly you need to showcase different sides of your personality like trust, emotional connect and integrity. Personal branding is the “great differentiator” in your job search, while receiving promotion or to grow business. It talks loudly about your vitality, unique value, strength of character, and passions about your work.
To build personal brand, you need to answer two fundamental questions and then bridge the gap:
1. WHAT I WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR?
2. WHAT AM I KNOWN FOR?
WHAT I WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR? entails self-introspection. What do YOU believe about you? Your strength and weaknesses, your values, personal mission, and unique attributes. This is not going to be an easy exercise, but in order for it to work, you need to be brutally honest with yourself. Moreover, spend time on learning about yourself.
Second critical question is WHAT AM I KNOWN FOR? To get precise answer, your peers, friends, bosses or even your family members can be contributory. Here honesty and your openness for feedback are at utmost significant. This exercise you will be exceptionally enlightened about what people think of you–it may not be what you expect.
Nevertheless, now it is time for reality check and bridge the gap between two questions. Since it is the intersection of what you believe about you and what others believe about you. Ask yourself are you contented or satisfied with an image which individuals transmit about you? if the answer is encouraging then continue demonstrating the same kind of behaviour in person meetings, on e-communication or social media platforms and if not, then develop strategies to develop your desire brand.
We cannot rely on others to make us successful. We have no choice but take ownership of our identity, in order to achieve our dreams. Ultimately you are unique YOU are the BEST BRAND make it OUTSTANDING!
