??? Tips for Getting the Most Out of Runway Gen 3 Alpha

We’ve all seen the incredible AI video demos circulating recently, like those from Runway’s Gen 3 Alpha and Luma’s Dream Machine. They may not be at SORA’s level yet, but some are pretty mind-blowing—like a car transforming into a pop-up café.

These demos had me thinking, just grab your debit card, buy some video credits, start prompting, and voilà—you’re the Steven Spielberg of AI.

But I quickly realized it’s not that simple. In reality, Runway often produces quirky results, like this music video of octogenarians tearing up the dance floor!

We spent the past week experimenting with Gen 3 Alpha (you can start using it for free!), and here’s what I discovered:

• Great for fantastical content: Transformations, monsters, or anything otherworldly are handled impressively.
• Struggles with human-like interactions: Realistic body movements or physical interactions tend to fall short.
• Standalone environments shine: It generates environments well but avoids background actors unless you’re working with a bird's-eye view.

Why’s this so tricky? Teaching an AI to create videos that maintain semantic and contextual coherence is extremely difficult. Even when you manage that, I found it can take hundreds of prompt attempts to get satisfying results.

Because this tech is so new, helpful resources are still scarce. Fortunately, Runway offers a guide with tips for getting the best results. Here's the prompt format they suggest:

"[camera movement]: [establishing scene]. [additional details]."

For example: "Low angle static shot: The camera looks up at a woman dressed in orange, standing in a tropical rainforest with colorful flora. The overcast sky is dramatic and gray."

Here are some personal tips I’ve picked up while using these AI video generators:

• Stick to single subjects for now. I found it best to avoid any interactions with devices or background characters to get the smoothest results.
• Steer clear of hands if possible—they tend to come out looking strange. Focus on subjects walking or use close-ups or "medium close" shots from the shoulders up.
• Generate longer clips and edit down. I recommend creating 10-second clips, then cutting them down to 2-3 seconds of usable footage for the best results.

?? A New Text-to-Image Model Takes the Lead

An AI startup, Black Forest Labs, has just emerged from stealth mode—and it’s already surpassing the competition. Their new suite of text-to-image models, called FLUX 1, outperforms industry giants like Midjourney 6.0, DALL-E 3 HD, and Stable Diffusion 3-Ultra in key areas like image detail, scene complexity, and prompt accuracy.

I was impressed by how quickly they’ve leaped ahead in the AI space. Using the Elo rating system, Black Forest leads across the board and offers all the aspect ratio and style options you’d expect from today’s top image generators.

What sets them apart? Several engineers come from Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, which faced internal issues earlier this year when CEO Emad Mostaque stepped down after allegations of mismanagement.

Black Forest Labs is backed by some of the biggest names in the AI world, including Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan and Timo Aila, a senior researcher at Nvidia. I was particularly impressed to see that Andreessen Horowitz led the startup’s $31 million seed funding round, adding further credibility to their growth potential.

What sets Black Forest apart? They’ve combined several experimental training techniques to make FLUX 1 faster and more accurate.

• One approach that stood out to me is the use of rotary positional embeddings—this helps the model track large sequences more effectively by assigning each piece of data its own distinct characteristics.
• Additionally, they’ve implemented a parallel diffusion transformer, allowing the model to analyze multiple parts of a sequence at once, speeding up the process of transforming visual noise into a clear image.

What’s next? Black Forest is gearing up to release a state-of-the-art text-to-video model soon. If it’s anything like FLUX 1, other video-focused AI companies like OpenAI, HeyGen, and Runway might have a tough time competing. In the meantime, you can try out FLUX 1 on cloud platforms like Fal and Replicate.
