Build Your Own Plaque
When I told my wife I was thinking about building a YouTube channel, she said something surprising.?
?"I don't know if you'll have the humility to make it."?
?That caught me off guard, so I asked her what she meant.?
?"Well, you have close to 300,000 Twitter followers and 120,000 Instagram followers. I don't know if your ego will be able to stand what it will take to grow that YouTube channel."?
?God bless spouses who tell us the truth.?
?She was right. My video from Wednesday has 164 views. I tweeted about it. I linked to it from Instagram and Facebook. I told as many people as I could and it has 164 views.?
?It's so tempting to give up in moments like that, especially when you compare the results of the new thing to the results of the old thing. ?
?When you do, you're being so mean to yourself. ?
?It took me 10 years to build my Twitter following, why would I expect those same results on YouTube in 10 weeks??
?I see this happen all the time with health goals. ?
?It took us 10 years to gain the weight and then we beat ourselves up when we haven't lost it all in 10 days. ?
?I'm not doing that this time. I'm putting my ego aside and celebrating each and every step.?
?YouTube sends you a silver play button when you get 100,000 subscribers.?
?I'm currently 92,000 away from that so I had to build my own plaque. For now. ?
?Thanks for subscribing to my new channel. https://bit.ly/3e1AOEs
?Don't let your ego decide which new adventures you'll go on. ?
Celebrate the small wins along the way. ?

4 年Truly wise words. Comparison is such a killer when it comes to building something new. Celebrate the process and the progress. I read that somewhere from a wise queso-loving author.

4 年Great thoughts here, Jon Acuff. And perhaps some perspective will help. The other social media sites don't like it when you link out to YouTube, so it's not easy to get engagement from that. It takes a lot more work. And to get discovered on YouTube is challenging because so much video is uploaded there. So I love that you're celebrating wins along the way. I'm doing that too with my fledgling channel. I have 15 subscribers right now. And counting...
