I’d like to tell you about one of the very important steps you will need to complete before starting your remote accounting business. This step is all about building your network.
Finding clients for your accounting business will be one of the most challenging tasks. And it will take time to attract your audience and to build trust. So it’s best to start building your network now, even before you take any steps to set up your business.
So how can you build your network of contacts?
Spread the word on social media
Utilize your existing connections and let people know that you are going to start an online practice. They might know someone who is looking for an accountant. LinkedIn is a great platform when it comes to Business To Business networking. Of course, you need to go where your potential clients hang out. It may be the case that they are on Facebook or Instagram. I find LinkedIn working pretty well in terms of the organic reach. On the other platforms, you might need to consider paid advertising to extend your reach.
Attend networking events
You will find loads of valuable networking events both online and in person. And they still work when it comes to building your business network. Some of my first clients came from networking events. However, you need to be selective and choose events where you can meet your potential clients. If for example you are going to target businesses trading online, the in-person local event might not be a good fit. Also, remember to use your time wisely and come with a clear purpose in mind.

Ask for referrals
If you have been neglecting your job references and recommendations, it’s time to change this. Referrals are still the most powerful way of attracting clients and gaining trust. At the beginning you will not have referrals from clients, so use your current and previous job references. They will work well too. For example, you can ask your former and current managers or co-workers to submit recommendations through LinkedIn. There is a special section on your profile dedicated to this and I find it very useful.
Ask other accountants
Connect with other like-minded accountants already working in practice. It’s likely that they may need help with the current workload. You could gain valuable experience and possibly find your future clients. But remember to be ethical and don’t try to “steal” clients from them. Just offer help and don’t expect too much in return. Obviously, you would not be working for free. The charge is usually agreed based on the percentage of fees.
