A recruitment update from Martin:
Is the economy slowing down?
That is the primary concern of candidates this month, which means I'm having lots of conversations about job security and salary levels.
Are these fears well-founded?
Well as we all know, specific sectors within the built environment space are slowing down. (Apartment buildings and new home builds being primary examples.)
But let's step back for a minute and look more broadly at the economy. Specifically, let's turn to the figures -- which don't lie. And right now, the data shows very low unemployment levels across all industries -- especially (and significantly) within construction and property. That is a good sign.
Now let's look a little closer to home. At Building Environs, our data shows that vacancy levels remain high. But only a few candidates are available to fill those available roles. So while employers might think that the 'battle for talent' will cool down soon, we've seen no evidence of that.
Instead, the volume of applicants remains low -- and continues to be driven by candidates without the appropriate levels of experience that employers seek.
That means that any high-quality, active candidates are in a strong position and are receiving plenty of offers - lucky them!
Our advice to employers? Keep refining and improving your EVP and recruitment process. And most importantly: keep your recruitment process snappy so your competitors don't get a chance to gazump you and snatch your candidates out from under your nose.
To candidates, we say this: Seek out employers who demonstrate stability, who provide a variety of project work, and who you feel confident are employee-centric.
