Build Space Design Template
Today's topic is space templates for general architecture. Also, in the example I'm going to show you this time, I've prepared a perspective to look at our design process again.
We can review the layout of the space in the upstream process and fill the interior of the space in the downstream process. Typically, once the architectural design is complete, the structural team reviews the structure and provides feedback. But in the meantime, the architectural design is updated. As a result, interference often occurs between the architectural model and the structural model.
One of the purposes of using BIM is that it has the advantage of being able to check the interference between architecture and structure, but I try to imagine this. What if we can avoid interference by working with architecture and structural members from the beginning? As the location and thickness of the floor finish change, it affects the location of the slab, and What if can this information be integrated into Excel and managed while the structural and construction departments access it together? I applied these thoughts together to this template process example.
We have prepared a mass model, upper and lower floor levels, and a 2D sketch so that you can grasp the location and shape of the space as input of the template.
There is one template in this case, and this Template is linked to the location and thickness of each member entered in Excel which is anytime able to update, by the name of each space.

In this model, slab information is entered together at the bottom of the floor finish, and it is always moved along with the floor finish, So by design, indirection doesn't happen. The slab made in this way will be the input to the next process such as the detailed slab process, and the Beam structure design process. You can imagine that a change in the slab automatically updates the beams or details below it.
No wall members were created in this space template. This is because I thought that the type and location of wall members in general buildings came after the space was arranged. For example, an exterior wall must stand in a space that is in contact with the outside, and when a space is in contact with a space on the inside, it is determined which wall type to apply.
Today, while applying space templates, I hope it will be time to think about the process of applying BIM, slightly departing from the process of the 2D environment that we have generally used. In the case of structural slabs, the process of wall creation, etc., these ideas will actually have much more know-how from the designers in practice. These are the parts that I think are inefficient in practice. Please share what you think is an inefficient design method.
If you have an idea for a new way of the process, template engineers like us can realize that idea through BIM.
