Build a Remembrance

Build a Remembrance

Are you a leadership minimalist or a nostalgic leader?

If you’re like me, you get the job done and then move on to the next thing.

But that is not always the best approach.

As always, let's look to the past for some ancient leadership wisdom we can learn from!

??? ???????? ?????????? ???????????????????? - ???????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????????? ???

??????? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???? ???????? ????????????, ???? ???????? ???? ???????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????????? ???????????????????? ????????????

Get a Bible, either online or in print, and read Joshua 4:1-9.

Did you notice what happened after the people crossed the Jordan River?

The first thing they did was to gather stones and put them in a pile.

What? Why?

They built a memorial that would last for generations (see verse 7) so that they would never forget what happened and who did it.

While it would have been tempting to move to the next thing right away (after all, they had a huge task in front of them), they took time to make sure they didn’t forget.

Notice the blending of symbolism (twelve leaders from the twelve tribes) with something tangible (stones from the middle of the river).

Think of your leadership personality.

Is your default setting to move on to the next thing or to stop and remember?

Both are important, but I wonder if many of us spend too much time moving ahead and not enough time making sure we don’t forget.

This week, set aside time to reflect on what has happened in your organization since the beginning of the year.

What needs to be remembered?

Remembrances stand as reminders to the major events that shape who we are and where we are going.

In your specific context, what remembrance needs to be built?

Build it.

(if you have built a remembrance recently, share it in the comments below!)

Insightful! What I've also discovered through the years is when I move on too quickly God gently and sometimes not so gently stops me in my tracks to take a minute to remember. Remember the mistakes- remember the losses - remember the wins - and remember to be grateful ??!

I've always loved this Joshua story. Leaders celebrate and remember. Thanks for the reminder, Mark!
