Build It...

Hi and welcome back (or, if this is your first time reading one of my articles here, welcome for the first time).

I've spent the recent past building some ideas around various problems (one per edition) with one actionable tip (per edition) using some of the concepts from the "Eisenhower Matrix."

Good stuff (you can view a summary of all my weekly articles here).

Learning is a good thing.

Reflecting is a better thing.

Today, I need to remind you:

BUILD IT.

Building is the best thing.

The Problem:?I Stopped Building

This week, imagine you and I are walking down some deserted street.

We are hoping to find someplace on this deserted street to grab a good dessert together.

You decide?what kind of dessert we will eat once we find it.

ME: "Hey, how are you?"
YOU: "I keep learning and reflecting on stuff but uhh... I am not actually building anything these days."

My consulting work with teams around the world leads me to many incredible places (even via zoom lol).

I get to work with some amazing teams who are learning new things.

And.

Sometimes, these teams have not delivered anything in awhile (hmmm... you know, Focus. #deliver lol).

Yes, I am looking in the mirror at myself here too -- it's not just "them" or "you"

There are many techniques, processes, or frameworks people use to get stuff done (including Implementing Scrum as one of popular ways I help people build things).

And sometimes, these teams are so wrapped around the axle around trying to be "perfect" at whatever framework, process, or technique they are trying to implement that they forget their main purpose in life as an organization.

Solving a problem for their customer or end user.

At the end of the day, no matter WHAT kind of organization you are working in today -- from non-profit, school, NGO, government organization, solopreneur, startup, midsize, or enterprise global mega company -- it comes down to that.

You need to build a solution to an existing problem.

The Actionable Tip: Build It

So.

Stop reading this stuff or, even worse, doom scrolling to the latest and greatest drama happening in the world.

Build the damn thing.

Build something.

Build anything.

Even if it's crappy and embarrassing.

Really.

Build it.

Start getting feedback about the solution you think solves a problem.

Build it.

Your Next Step...

Breathe.

Oh.

And build it (smile).

Here is the part where?I need YOU to contribute YOUR actionable tip?for others who are reading this short article....

Please share ONE actionable tip in the comments below about what you have learned by building an actual solution to a problem (even if it was not perfect).

Go.

Thank you.

Building begets more building! I often find once I start building something and get into a flow state, I think of even more ways to iterate and create -- stuff I wouldn't have thought of if I stayed stuck in the planning phase. Getting started and getting over perfectionism, as Cheryl said, seems to be key!

Just do it, and stop thinking about how you need to build it. Because when you are doing the work, you automatically get the solution out of it immediately. I love the post, Michael Vizdos, and keep up the excellent work with focusing and #delivering. ??????

"Even if it's crappy and embarrassing" I think this is a key part here. My engineer Dad was fond of saying "the perfect is the enemy of the good." You have to start from somewhere. Don't waste cycles on making something perfect, get something out there that people can react to and guide to be better. And don't feel embarrassed for trying. You made something!
