BUILD ME A HOUSE

Many will not believe as I believe or display the faith as I do, but I must tell this story as it truly came to be. This mission was bestowed upon me 11 years ago in 2004. In the middle of a daily praise and worship moment, I receive a question from the Lord. The question was, “Why are my people homeless?” The question caught me by surprise and rendered me speechless. I did not respond and neither did God say another word. Two years later, I heard the same voice asking me the same question, “Why are my people Homeless?” In my mindset I answered, “I don’t know”. God’s responded to me by saying, “Build me a house and this is how it is to be built”. Now I tell you that I spent 19 years of my adult life as a contractor and I knew exactly what I was seeing as images of blueprints and floor plans, layouts and diagrams began flooding into my mind. I immediately got what I like to call “The Noah Complex”. God then showed me this magnificent building in its full glory...all 25 floors of it. I have spiritually walked through it's halls and stepped into each room as the presence of the Lord saturated and anointed each and every fiber of me and that structure.  My first reaction was Glory to God and praise be to his name for I had been chosen to do his work…HALLELUJAH!!!

Deuteronomy 15:7-11 King James Version (KJV) “7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: 8 But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. 9 Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. 10 Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. 11 For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.”

When God gives you an assignment…DO IT. It took me 8 of the 11 years to catch on to this simple concept. GOD’S HOUSE: Rehabilitation Center for the Homeless, Inc. is the answer to the cries that have been heard from the needy and the homeless. Looking in from the outside you can try to imagine their struggle, their pain. I have always said, “Walk a mile in my shoes and you will know my pain”. God, the wises of us all put me in a position to do just that. In 2013, I became homeless and entered into the shelter system. For 6 months, I experienced the difficulties one must go through just to receive help. I saw firsthand the conditions that they endure just to get a roof over their heads, if only for one night. I have had to sleep in a chair for a week. Eat food that the facility considered healthy and nutritious, in fact would choke a mule. Servings that would leave a three year old with hunger pains. I saw more illegal drugs being sold in the shelter system then on the street. The worst part about my experience was that it was a revolving door: NO INITIATIVES, NO REHABILITATION, and NO CHANGE. Some of the people that I had talked to had been in the system consistently for over five years; staying 3-6 months and then re-entering the process all over again. There wasn't a sparkle of hope in their eyes or a glimmer of expectation to be seen. Hope and expectation had been replaced with complacency in a system that did not expect or encourage change. I believe wholeheartedly that God allowed me to experience many of these day to day obstacles and struggles that I might have better understanding to better serve those that pass through the doors of GOD’S HOUSE...not just to make a difference, but to make a change. I say to you today, when you walk down the sidewalks or drive to work. As you pass by the man, woman, or child that you might only know as "the homeless man, beggar, or bum", remind yourself that at any given time in life that this could have been you. Life is hard and even harder for those who are less fortunate or have succumbed to tragedy and loss. Don't look down on them, reach down and lend a hand up.
