Build It Like A Game

Build It Like A Game

I'm making a game.

Two technically - I guess, cause I just started another lol

I swear I'm not a crazy person : )

I just can't help myself. I love playing DnD so much and I just want to play more of it. I mean, that's why I started DnD Networking Night.

But I created this game called Symbiotes! You play a tiny alien ooze whose main purpose is to consume the minds and bodies of everything on a new planet you're about to crash land on. That is, until The Exalted show up.

It's a murderhobo's paradise : )

I came up with it over a year ago now. I've play-tested it about 9 times now. Each time, finding ways to improve the game based on player feedback and my notes after playing each session.

That feedback loop is key

Not just what my players tell me after the game.

I pay attention to how they interact with and play the game throughout the session. Looking for things that slow them down or ways to make the game cooler.

Then it hit me. That's what I'm missing from my course content.

I've been making a bunch of worksheets for my courses and coaching programs because I treat it like a game.

I give 'em out like candy, but I don't get the same level of feedback I do from actually play testing it like I do with Symbiotes!

So I had a thought:

  • I need to do a better job of tracking who I'm giving my worksheets out to
  • Then get more engaged in the implementation process

That will create the feedback loop I'm looking for.

It's a simple landing page and workflow. I already drafted part of it today.

Now we'll see how it all plays out : )

That's the trick for keeping people going in courses Dan Mott. Keeping them engaged. A feedback loop just might do the trick. I'm curious to see how this goes.
