DOUBLE YOUR BUSINESS By Bradley Chapman UK Award-Winning Business Consultant | 30+ Years of Entrepreneurial Experience

Edition 19: Build It and They Will Come

These aren’t just iconic words from Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner. They’re a powerful mantra for entrepreneurs and business owners. When we strive to build with relentless energy and unwavering belief, we set the stage for growth, success, and opportunity.

But let’s be real: Building isn’t easy. It’s not a single action or a fleeting idea. It’s a continual process — one that requires adapting, evolving, and meeting the needs of your customers, market, and financial climate.

Now, let me ask you this:

  • What are you building right now?
  • Do you have a vision of what your business could be tomorrow, in six months, or a year from now?
  • If not, what’s holding you back from seeing it?

Let’s explore the answers together.

What Does "Build It and They Will Come" Mean for Your Business?

Building is about solving problems. Every product or service you offer is a solution to a challenge your customer faces. The key is to identify those problems and build solutions so compelling that your customers can’t resist.

Question: How do I know what my customers need? Answer: Listen. Your customers are already telling you through their feedback, behaviour, and pain points. Ask them. Survey them. Spend time in their shoes and see the world through their eyes.

Question: What if I’m stuck and don’t know where to start? Answer: Start small. You don’t need a grand vision on day one. Focus on one thing you can improve, build, or adapt today. Then build momentum.

Daring to Dream and Visualise

Some of my best business strategies come to me late at night. That’s when my mind wanders, and solutions to challenges start to crystallise. If you’re struggling to dream and visualise, here’s how to turn the light bulb on:

  • Close Your Eyes and Imagine: What does your business look like when it’s thriving? Who are your customers? What problems are you solving for them?
  • Write It Down: A vision is just a dream until you put it into words. Write down your ideas, no matter how small or unpolished they may seem.
  • Ask Yourself "What If?": What if you could expand into a new market? What if you could serve a new audience? What if you could offer something no one else does?

Question: But what if I can’t see the future clearly? Answer: That’s okay. Vision isn’t always crystal-clear at first. Focus on why you started your business in the first place. That clarity will guide you toward your next step.

The Power of Persistence

Here’s a truth every entrepreneur must accept: Visualisation alone isn’t enough. You have to act. You have to claw, climb, and push forward even when the path feels impossible.

Question: How do I keep going when progress feels slow? Answer: Break it down. Success is the sum of small, consistent actions. Focus on what you can do today, not the mountain you have to climb.

Question: What if I fail? Answer: Failure isn’t the end — it’s feedback. Every setback is a lesson that gets you closer to your goal. The only true failure is giving up.

Building Is a Journey, Not a Destination

Building a business is a constant cycle of creation, adaptation, and growth. It’s about moving forward, step by step, with your vision guiding the way.

Here’s what to focus on:

  1. Adaptation: Markets change. Customers evolve. The financial climate shifts. Building means staying flexible and ready to pivot.
  2. Customer Problems: Every sale you make is a solution to a problem. The better you solve their problems, the more they’ll come back.
  3. Belief in Your Vision: When you truly believe in what you’re building, your passion will drive you forward.

Ask Yourself:

  • What’s one thing I can build or improve in my business today?
  • How can I adapt to better meet my customers’ needs?
  • What does success look like for me, and how can I take a step closer to it?
