Today: With the recent impact from COVID-19 our current recession is unique, however, in that it presents our last, best chance to avoid irreparable climate damage.
In October 2018, the IPCC warned that humanity had just 12 years to cut global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels . By the time the next recession hits, it will be too late. The UK must not miss this once-in-a-generation chance to invest for a truly green recovery.
We are making the case for the benefits of at least an extra £1bn per year to support a greener recovery in the UK post COVID. We want to see from teh UK Government a more significant commitment to more green infrastructure by funding, enhancing and caring for our parks, places & landscapes.
Key principles in our report that has been developed by the Landscape Institute in partnership with leading practitioners across the parks, place & landscape sectors:
- Take a natural capital approach to new infrastructure and housing
- Invest in maintenance and retrofit of existing places
- Set higher and fairer standards for green space
- Invest in natural solutions to climate change
- Create a step-change in green skills, digital, and data
