Specializing in flights to popular vacation destinations such as the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Florida, Spirit Airlines has faced criticism for their past advertising campaigns. One example includes their "Eye of the Tiger" sale, which made light of golfer Tiger Woods' car accident.
However, their June 2010 ad campaign took the cake with its reference to the ongoing BP oil spill. NOTE: The BP Oil Spill was the longest and most severe offshore oil spill in United States history. On?April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, operated by the BP oil company, exploded, killing 11 people and sending 134 million gallons of crude oil straight into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Featuring a woman in a bikini covered in suntan lotion lying on a beach, the ad's caption read, "Check out the oil on our beaches: [Various Locations]." The campaign received overwhelmingly negative reactions and was widely regarded as insensitive and distasteful. Despite Spirit Airlines' initial defense that the campaign was misunderstood, they eventually acknowledged the backlash and discontinued the advertisements.
'Edgy' advertising based on trending news and events can be great if executed correctly, but doing it with a comedic undertone to one of century's greatest catastrophes at sea probably isn't the best idea.
