Bucket Elevator Inspection: Key Issues & Solutions

Regular inspections are crucial for safety, efficiency, and preventing costly failures. At 4B, we often see these common issues:

Bucket Elevator Inspection - Common Issues & Solutions

?? Worn or Loose Slide Lagging - Causes belt misalignment & slippage, leading to heat buildup & explosion risks. Use speed sensors & misalignment sensors for early detection.

?? Broken Buckets - Foreign objects can enter the elevator and break buckets, reduce throughput & cause blockages. Install screens, magnets for protection; use more impact-resistant heavy-duty buckets, and plug sensors to detect blocked chutes.

?? Excessive Bucket Wear - Leads to diminished throughput, inefficient discharge & back-legging. Check elevator parameters such as belt tension, speed, bucket spacing. Consider using digger buckets and / or more abrasion-resistant buckets.

?? Loose Sprocket on Head Shaft - Causes bucket wear & fire hazards. Use misalignment sensors to detect movement early.

?? Chain Wear & Stretch - Affects the efficient function of the entire chain elevator. Regular chain & sprocket inspections help prevent failure.

?? Loose Fasteners - Can lead to detached buckets & system damage. Tighten bolts regularly. Consider using fanged bolts or EASIFIT bolts for secure fastening.

TECH TIP: Troubleshooting Elevator Leg Issues

Diagnosing Problems Through Plastic Elevator Bucket Wear

To diagnose and troubleshoot elevator leg performance problems, it is possible to find clues by examining the plastic buckets for abnormal wear and tear.

Analysing Plastic Elevator Bucket Wear to Diagnose Elevator Leg Problems

Main Plastic Elevator Bucket Issues and Solutions:

1?? Side Wall Damage: Scrapes or scratches on the bucket side walls suggest belt migration. To resolve, level the pulley, ensure the pulley shafts are in good condition, and adjust belt tension to keep the belt centered. Check for misaligned belt cuts or improper splice angles.

2?? Front Lip Bowed Out: A bowed front lip may be caused by obstructions or improper belt tension. Adjust the throat plate, clear the boot section, and tighten the belt. If buckets fronts indicate wear from from heavy materials, consider nylon buckets for better durability.

3?? Excessive Wear: Rapid wear reduces bucket capacity. Causes include abrasive input materials or caking in the boot. Solutions include using abrasion-resistant materials like nylon or urethane, adding digger buckets to break up caked material, or fixing down-legging issues.

4?? Sharp Edges: Sharp bucket edges may indicate a loose belt or caked material. Increase belt tension or use digger buckets to prevent abrasion and maintain proper bucket shape.

5?? Cracks Between Bolt Holes: Cracks often result from impact or foreign objects. Over-tightening bucket bolts can also cause cracks. Ensure proper tightening and consider using larger fender washers to reinforce the bucket.

Case Study 3 -- Bottomless Elevator Bucket System for Grain Handling

?? Industry: Food Manufacturing ?? Challenge: To design a higher capacity bucket elevator- within size restrictions due to concrete floors - engineered for safety due to the dust hazard risks.

? Solution: Provided a bucket elevator design based on 4B’s “bottomless” elevator buckets (GB-Spidex), which use a unique design of open buckets followed by closed ones, allowing material to flow in a continuous column. Maximising elevator capacity, reducing material collection, and efficiently elevating dusty materials with extreme venting.
