Herbalife is one of the most popular weight loss supplements on the planet, in 2021 they generated $5.8 billion in top line revenue, so surely they must be a reputable company?
Well, let's take a look at the strategy and recommendations and you can make a decision for yourself on whether it is great idea for the next time you are trying to work towards getting fitter, healthier and shedding a few lbs.
The Problem
You see the problem with things like Herbalife is they are simply products promising the world. There are no skills, no fundamentals provided. Simply take this instead of eating and you will lose weight.
You may have experienced this before. You went on an extreme diet or weight loss journey, maybe you or someone you know even got surgery and yet 6-12 months down the line after some success you are worse off than when you started.
Why is this?
Well, let's dig a little deeper into what they actually suggest you do...
The Main Herbalife Strategy for Weight Loss
2 Shakes replacing 2 meals per day + 600 calorie dinner and also adding 2 snacks at 1500 calories?
All we are doing here is removing any food volume from the stomach and plummeting calories to an unsustainable level.
If we look at their actual products, the meal replacement, the multivitamin and the "fat burner" they are not actually that bad.
The problem is that the only thing they teach you is to cut out 2 meals per day and replace them with 2 shakes.
If you want to go on a crash diet when not just go the whole hog and cut out the 2 meals? Or even better just don't eat ??
If I said to you, just remove 2 meals per day and drink water for them, you would probably look at me like I had 2 heads... Yet this strategy is not that far removed.
Who in their right mind wants to consume nothing but 2 shakes a day for the rest of their life?
Herbalife is nothing but a crash diet. It teaches you nothing and is nothing more than a plaster for the true behavioural and lifestyle problems that cause the bulk of the issues.
Using Herbalife is simply like getting a loan to sustain a negative cash flow business. You didn't change anything that's causing the problem, all you done was delay the inevitable.
Wrap Up
The Herbalife products themselves are not terrible. The meal replacement is OK as a protein powder, the "fat burner" does have some evidence to back up short term benefits to fat loss however there is little evidence anywhere to suggest taking a multi vitamin is very effective.
But the overall strategy of "just cut this out and take this instead" is not beneficial in any way. And the relapse rates on approaches like this are staggering.
My personal opinion - AVOID ?.
My quick health tip of the week - Tape your mouth when you are sleeping. This sounds ridiculous, but there are some substantial studies coming out around the benefits of nose breathing and the detrimental effects of mouth breathing. I have been doing this for a few years and notice significant benefits
