BS EN 15344 – Characterisation of Polyethylene

BS EN 15344 – Characterisation of Polyethylene

Using recycled plastic in products or packaging is an effective way to reduce and reuse waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills. As awareness around plastic pollution accelerates, demand for recycled materials is significantly increasing. Businesses now must be able to take corrective measures to ensure they are able to meet the recyclability expectations of consumers whilst maintaining their quality.

In order to meet these expectations, characterisation testing must be conducted. Characterisation and testing of recyclates ensure product manufacturers are able to maintain the quality, consistency, functional properties and performance that customers may expect from the products. It can also enhance the safety and reliability of recycled plastic while complying with various legal requirements. Complying with these standards can provide retail value to a product or packaging, giving businesses the confidence they need to enter into new or existing markets.

European standard BS EN 15344 lays out test methods and characteristics for PE (polyethylene) recyclate that will be used in either semi-finished or finished products.

?

How do recyclers?characterise?recycled PE to BS EN 15344??

PE will be?characterised?by different?batches.?The required characteristics are required for all?recyclates, detailing:?

The?optional?characteristics, which can?provide a?little more information on the material:?

Method for the determination of contaminants?

This details the?contaminants?that may be found and determines them visually. There are three methods?that can?be used for determining whether there are non-melted particles and impurities (contaminants) in?recyclate. Batches of granules will be extruded at a weight of 10kg and will then be visually?inspected to determine contaminants.?

Test method for the determination of bulk density?

Bulk density refers to the mass per unit of volume relative to granules or powdered material.?This would be useful information to have in regards to giving an idea of how stable mixing will occur,?and the effects?of humidity and consistency between batches.?

At Impact, our experts have the knowledge and equipment required to carry out these tests for recyclers to give additional information regarding their material.
