Best book I have read in a long time! This is a non-fiction book about how bad ass the Comanches were. No one could defeat them for hundreds of years. They repelled the Spanish, Mexicans and other indian nations like the Apache. Not until the 1840s did they meet for the first time, people who were just as savage as they were, they were called "Rangers". These Texans were the first to have victories over them. What made the Comanches so dominant were several factors: They were barbaric with little tradition or art. They mastered the wild horses that escaped from Santa Fe. They would catch a herd of wild stallions. After a day they were all broke. The Comanches would strangle the stallion until it almost died. He would then blow air into It's mouth to revive it. The wild stalions could ride for miles on end in the treterous ennvironment called the 98th meridian. That area would be another reason for the Comanches succuess. To the white man it was an ocean of grass land that struck fear in their hearts. The mountain man's skills would not help him here. The author puts all these facts together so eloquently. Many of the stories come from first hand accounts. It's important for us to know what happened back then. Driving down to San Antonio will never be the same again. Even as I drive around Dallas, I can imagine the Comanches raiding a new comer from the east. That new comer had absolutely no clue they would be tortured with fire, his wife raped, his children kidnapped and lastly his brains scooped out of his head.
