Brussels Conference Secures €7.5 Billion in Aid for Syria and Neighboring Regions

On May 27, the eighth edition of the Brussels Conference on ‘Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region’ concluded with a remarkable commitment from international donors, securing over €7.5 billion to assist Syria and its neighboring countries. The funds consist of €5 billion in grants and €2.5 billion in loans, intended for 2024 and beyond.

The EU itself pledged €2.12 billion for 2024 and 2025, and the combined contributions from the EU and its Member States amounted to nearly €6 billion, strengthening their position as the largest supporters of the Syrian response. The conference brought together delegates from the EU Member States, the neighbouring countries, the United Nations and international financial institutions to discuss how to respond to the vital needs of Syrians and the host communities.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, the EU and its Member States have donated over €33 billion in humanitarian aid to Syria and the region to address war-related issues. This substantial support has been vital in assisting those affected by the conflict and aiding countries that have taken in Syrian refugees. The EU remains committed to facilitating a political resolution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The Ministerial meeting built upon discussions from the ‘Day of Dialogue’ on April 30, which included over 600 participants from Syrian civil society, the UN, EU Member States, and international NGOs. These discussions focused on various themes such as the political process, early recovery, health and education, livelihood opportunities, and accountability for missing persons. The event also featured around 50 side events and a cultural program showcasing Syrian arts, reflecting the international community's ongoing dedication to supporting Syria and its neighboring regions.
