Brushes with Cancer: Art as a Healing Connection

Brushes with Cancer: Art as a Healing Connection

What is Brushes with Cancer?

Brushes with Cancer is the core program of Twist Out Cancer, a global community that provides emotional and social support to those affected by cancer through creative arts. This unique initiative matches artists with individuals touched by cancer—survivors, previvors, and caregivers—to create original artwork that reflects personal cancer journeys.

Origins and Growth

The program stems from Twist Out Cancer's founding story. At 29, Jenna Benn Shersher was diagnosed with grey zone lymphoma, a rare cancer affecting fewer than 300 people in the United States. Isolated during treatment, she posted a video of herself doing "The Twist" dance, which unexpectedly resonated with thousands. This response showed her the value of sharing experiences and building community during difficult times.

Since its beginnings, Brushes with Cancer has grown significantly. To date, the program has connected 1,574 participants, resulting in 787 unique pieces of art representing individual cancer journeys. The program has reached people across 14 states and six countries, with exhibitions in cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Miami.

How the Program Works

The process unfolds over six months:

  1. Matching: Artists are carefully paired with "Inspirations"—individuals who have experienced cancer as patients, survivors, previvors, or caregivers.
  2. Relationship Building: These pairs develop relationships based on trust and understanding. The Inspiration shares their story, and the Artist listens deeply.
  3. Creation: The Artist creates an original piece that captures the Inspiration's journey.
  4. Celebration: The program culminates in an exhibition and celebratory event where the artwork is displayed and auctioned, with proceeds supporting Twist Out Cancer's mission.
  5. Support: Throughout the process, participants can join peer-to-peer groups led by trained facilitators, providing additional guidance and community.

Impact on Participants

The program affects both artists and inspirations profoundly:

As one Inspiration noted: "Sharing my story with someone who hasn't experienced cancer and seeing how they interpret my journey brings a unique perspective that's both refreshing and eye-opening."

Another participant shared: "This program came along when I needed that uplifting. The timing was absolutely perfect. I no longer dwell on that past experience; this program has shown me how strong I am and to never second guess myself ever again."

Artists also find meaning in the experience. Artist Dianey Rueda described her painting for Inspiration Anna Hill: "This painting aims to capture the hope and beauty she has discovered along her path, creating a piece that celebrates her strength and highlights her ability to bloom even in the most challenging conditions."

Program Expansion and Reach

Brushes with Cancer has shown remarkable growth:

  • In 2023, the program facilitated connections between 120 participants, creating 60 unique artworks.
  • In 2024, participation increased to 152 participants across four programs, producing 76 works of art.
  • The program expanded from accommodating 70 people previously to 150 participants in 2024.
  • Licensed programs have been developed with organizations like Blueprint Medicines, the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center, Wayne State University, and the Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

Public Exhibitions and Community Impact

The artwork created through Brushes with Cancer reaches far beyond the initial participants:

  • In 2024, the program hosted exhibitions at Writer's Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois, and Lilah Fishtown in Philadelphia.
  • These exhibitions were extended at North Shore Congregation Israel and the Old City Jewish Arts Center, allowing more people to connect with the stories.
  • The 2024 public programs touched more than 2,510 people through the artwork and events.

Looking Ahead

We continue to expand Brushes with Cancer to make the healing benefits of creative expression accessible to more people affected by cancer. We are committed to making its programs free and available to all participants, regardless of background or means.

As our community grows, we aims to create more opportunities for people to share their cancer stories, build connections, and experience healing through art.
