Raman and Battery Research
Raman microscopy and battery research go hand in hand - whether it’s the analysis of electrodes, electrolytes, or new carbon materials. In this video, we explain how Raman microscopy can be used to monitor the structural changes inside a lithium-ion battery. We also describe how Raman microscopy can help us investigate the physical and chemical processes in a graphite electrode.

Increasing the Energy Range and Sensitivity of EDS
Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) is a powerful technique for elemental analysis using a SEM. Conventional EDS analysis involves measuring the characteristic X-ray energies emitted from a sample when it interacts with the electron beam.

X-Ray Techniques: The Future of Battery Quality Control
The electric vehicle revolution is here, and with it comes the need for high-quality batteries. The key? The active materials used in the electrodes. As these materials face stricter specifications, quality control is more important than ever. X-ray techniques are essential for qualifying battery active materials. Here’s how they work:
X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), with tools like Bruker’s D8 ADVANCE, validates the ideal crystalline structure for Li ions in lithium-ion batteries. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, using equipment such as the S2 PUMA, accelerates material identification and quality control and is vital for battery recycling. Lastly, X-Ray Microscopy (XRM), using the SKYSCAN 2214, visualizes the internal 3D structure of batteries, aiding in understanding failure mechanisms.
If you’re interested in learning more, we recently hosted an online seminar all about these three technologies in the Battery Life Cycle.

Battery Research: Characterizing the Future E-Book
This thirty-page introductory E-Book?introduces the main analytical techniques used to characterize Li-ion battery materials.?In particular, it focuses on nanoindentation, a very common method for measuring the mechanical properties of materials, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization, which works by ‘touching’ the surface of materials with a mechanical probe to map their topography and properties with nanoscale resolution.
The E-Book explains how these techniques and their various modes work, and details how they are used for analyzing battery materials and what kind of information they can produce. It also presents case studies to illustrate how the techniques are being applied by working scientists in the laboratory.
