Brothers in Need 2022 Wrap-Up
How we’ve come together to support the community in 2022
After the challenges of the past few years, you’d be forgiven for thinking 2022 would be easier. Unfortunately, we are still riding the waves of COVID, many members of our community have been displaced or put in financial stress due to the recent floods, and those who need it most still rely on Brothers In Need and our committed volunteers to provide much-needed services.
It’s been a busy but incredibly rewarding 2022 at Brothers In Need, so let’s reflect on some of the highlights from the year and look ahead to a brighter 2023 and beyond.
Starting the year with a bang
We kicked off 2022 the same way we wrapped up the previous year – by getting amongst our community and helping those who need it most.
Our first?Soup Kitchen ?for the year was held at?The Culinary School in Punchbowl. We had a host of volunteers cook up an absolute storm. The freshly made meals were later distributed to our homeless community members in Martin Place and across various parts of the Sydney CBD.

Community spirit at Ramadan
In collaboration with Bankstown Central, we spent the month of Ramadan conducting our?Eid Giving Moon initiative, where patrons could donate gifts that were later distributed to community members in need during Eid. Gifts included toys, food products, drinks, plus much more.
A generous member of the community also organised an iftar, whereby all profits went towards?Brothers In Need,?The Rehabilitation Project?&?Project Quran. Ramadan Iftar was a night full of fun and food in April. We would like to thank?Br. Mohamad?and?Sr. Joumana?for a wonderful event held at the Gardens On Forest in Peakhurst.
Latest blog: Managing mental health: How to support an affected loved one
With so much going on in our everyday lives, it’s easy to overlook those who are struggling – whether it’s people in our community sleeping rough on the streets or residents trying to minimise the damage of increasing flood crises.
But when an issue strikes closer to home, such as a family member or loved one struggling with mental health issues, it’s important to take steps to support them through these difficult times.

Food hamper packs
Throughout the year, we put together food hamper packs to assist refugees, orphans, widows, families doing it tough, and the needy. As part of our?Mobile Food Pantry?initiative, Brothers In Need has been delivering food hampers and hot food packs to financially disadvantaged and vulnerable people since 2015.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been significant financial and social impacts on people from various diverse communities, resulting in higher unemployment rates, a greater risk of poverty, and a greater reliance on welfare assistance to cover basic needs such as food and shelter.

Brothers in Need Leadership Impact Award
Brothers In Need were honoured to support Crescent Wealth’s?Crescent Awards Night. The initiative recognised and showcased the inspired contributions and efforts of educators, educational teams, educational leaders and administrators, and Muslim learners across sites of education in Australia.
The?Brothers in Need Leadership Impact Award?recognises an aptitude for leadership in school or in an external setting, and leadership activity that demonstrates outstanding contribution, service, or effort, with impact, inclusive of personal growth and refinement, that has demonstrably benefited self and others. Congratulations to both finalists –?Layth Alsomai?from the Australian International Academy, Kellyville, and?Anhaar Kareem?from Al Noori Muslim School.

Microsoft x Brothers In Need collaboration
In November we had the pleasure of meeting the team from?Microsoft ANZ, who joined us for our Hospital Program. We visited?Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital?and handed out gifts to sick children, with the hope of bringing a smile to their faces.
We would like to thank the team at Microsoft for kindly donating not just the gifts, but their time in supporting the local community.
