The Brooklyn Nets “Netaverse” Changes What’s Possible with Live VR Events

Sports leagues are in a constant battle for younger attention – competing with video games and Twitch streamers, TikTok and YouTube rabbit holes, and an endless streaming experience.

One attempt at appealing to the younger crowd is through the actual content of the sports action. For example, the NFL introduced the NFL Slimetime broadcast this year with Nickelodeon. NFL Slimetime animates on-field action in real-time with cartoonish expressions and features kid commentators too.

Another approach is to meet this younger crowd in different tech formats, aside from the TV screen. Paving this new path is the Brooklyn Nets with the launch of the Netaverse.

The Netaverse is a VR simulcast of Brooklyn Nets games. But it’s not just a big screen in VR. They’re literally scanning and rendering the actions of all 10 players on the court. In other words, it’s like a real version of an NBA 2k video game.

In the video below, I discuss how the Netaverse works and ideas on how it will evolve to change sports broadcasting.

The Netaverse previews a lot more possibilities than just sports.

The Netaverse proves that the tech is ready for live, concurrent digital and physical experiences. If an NBA game can be rendered live with little lag in VR, then so can fashion shows, conferences, car auctions, concerts, you name it.

Imagine if all of the medal finals in the Olympics were rendered in this VR format like the Netaverse? How would that change people’s perception of the Olympics? Would it reignite Olympics obsession in a new crowd?

Fashion shows make a lot of sense for this Netaverse idea, as well. The stunning outfits ought to be scanned into a virtual file format anyways for NFT possibilities, but think about how fashion shows could be reimagined with environments that actually fit the fits. Versace could literally host their next Fall/Winter collection on an iceberg in Antarctica.

The current iteration of the Netaverse might not change sports as we know it. But their tech is going to inspire an entire wave of creators.
