Brooke asks holidaymakers to act against mistreated animals in tourism

This summer, Brooke?launched a campaign asking tourists to look out for working animals whilst on holiday and shared how to help them.??

Horses and donkeys working in tourism can travel long distances, often in harsh climates and over challenging terrain. As they pull carts or carry people and heavy luggage, their welfare can often be overlooked.

Tourism is a vital stream of income for many communities around the world, but this shouldn’t be at cost to animal welfare. We are educating holidaymakers on the responsible use of animals in tourism through our Happy Horses Holiday Code.?

New vet clinics will help 60,000 animals a year

Brooke is constructing three more veterinary clinics in?Ethiopia?over the next year, which are each set to help around 20,000 animals a year.?

The clinics, run by local service providers trained by Brooke, will bring several benefits to the communities they’re based in, including preventative care like farriery, handling advice and improved harnessing.

This is part of Brooke’s ongoing mission to improve vaccination services and?animal health?infrastructure in Ethiopia?to help the working horses, donkeys and mules depended on by many small-scale farmers.

World Photography Day

19 August 2024 was World Photography Day - a time for Brooke to reflect on its most influential shots of working animals and people!

From horses in the rolling mountains of Nicaragua, to John the farrier in Kenya and archival shots of rescued ex-war horses returning to the UK, the emotion and scenery captured by those photos is heartwarming.

Day in the life of a donkey care club student

On International Youth Day (12 August 2024), Ann, a student at Kitui Central Primary School, shared her experience?of?the school's donkey care club, which has helped her knowledge of animal welfare.

Ann is always excited for Wednesday evenings at donkey care club, where students discuss donkey welfare and the freedoms they should provide them with through poetry, art and music.

To create a better world, the younger generation must be part of the change needed to give working animals a life worth living.

Great idea. Often my holidays are memorable for the wrong reasons - seeing animal cruelty and neglect and feeling powerless to do something about it
