Broken Wings That Fly High
My name is Malkia, a 24-year-old writer, poet, and advocate for Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights (SRHR). My journey to becoming who I am today has been marked by a traumatic event that changed my life forever.
When I was 10-years-old, I experienced something no child should ever endure. I vividly remember the day when a man approached me while I was playing with my friends.? Initially, he seemed harmless as he asked for directions to the chief's office. Little did I know that this encounter would turn into a nightmare.
As we walked towards the chief’s office, the man suddenly grabbed me and dragged me into a nearby bush. It was at that moment when my innocence was stolen from me as he defiled me. To make matters worse, he threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone about what had happened.
The next day, the man returned with the same sinister intentions, but this time, my elder sister came to my rescue. She shouted for help from our neighbors, and an angry mob chased the man away. The man's privileged background and connections shield him from facing the consequences of his actions. They argued that he was mentally unstable, setting him free while I was left with the scars of his abuse. Justice was not served!
In the aftermath of this trauma, I felt compelled to change everything about myself. I altered my appearance, the way I dressed, spoke, and behaved. I did everything to avoid looking feminine, hoping it would protect me from further harm. It was during this dark period that I discovered the power of poetry. Writing became my refuge, a safe space where I could escape reality and the cruel taunts of my peers.
One day, a classmate stumbled upon my poems and encouraged me to join the music club. This newfound community gave me a sense of belonging, love, and acceptance - everything I yearned for. I also got the courage to reclaim my voice and speak up boldly through the club.
After completing high school, I seized an opportunity to join the Youth Development Agenda. Here, I immersed myself in learning about SRHR thus empowering myself to take ownership of my voice.
Today, I am proud to call myself a bold feminist and advocate committed to creating spaces where girls and young women can freely express their fears, feelings, victories, and experiences. My mission is to ensure that no one else has to suffer in silence and that justice prevails for survivors of abuse.
