Introduction
Imagine a neighborhood where a single broken window goes unrepaired. Soon, more windows are smashed, graffiti appears, and the overall sense of orderliness declines. This is the essence of the Broken Windows Theory, and it has surprising relevance to the world of leadership.
What is the Broken Windows Theory?
Originally proposed by criminologists, the Broken Windows Theory suggests that visible signs of neglect in an environment create a perception that no one cares, encouraging further deterioration. In homes, organizations, and society "broken windows" can take many forms, and ignoring them has a similarly corrosive effect.
The Role of Leaders as "Window Fixers"
Great leaders are attuned to the "broken windows" within their organizations. They recognize that small signs of neglect, unresolved issues, and inefficiencies can create a snowball effect, impacting morale, performance, and overall excellence.
Examples of "Broken Windows" in the Workplace
Lingering Friction: Unresolved tension or conflict between team members, even if subdued, erodes trust and collaboration.
Outdated Processes: Cumbersome or inefficient procedures that frustrate staff and create bottlenecks.

Missed Cues: Drops in engagement, subtle changes in communication patterns, or minor but recurring errors signal a potential decline in standards.
Apathy and Dis ownership: Lack of accountability or initiative, where individuals wait to be told what to do instead of taking proactive steps.
'Minor' signs of neglect such as stains on the carpet, slight delays, dirty windows, pieces of paper on the floor, phones not being answered promptly etc.
The Consequences of Neglect
Overlooking these "broken windows" sends the message that low standards are acceptable. This can have a ripple effect, gradually lowering expectations and fostering a culture of mediocrity.
A Call to Action
Cultivate Vigilance: Leaders must develop an eye for detail, mindfully observing the organizational landscape, not micromanaging.
Empower Teams: Encourage employees to identify potential "broken windows" and participate in finding solutions.
Act on the 'Small Stuff:' Address even minor issues promptly, reinforcing the expectation that excellence matters in every aspect. Preach the message of excellence always, it will make a difference.
