When and why do you land with a broken or chipped tooth?
Although enamel (the outer covering of the teeth) is the hardest tissue in the body, it is very brittle and can be broken.
Teeth can be damaged in many ways. The most common reason remains playing outdoors without proper safety protocols like a mouth guard or when you suffer a traumatic fall, crash, or blow.
According to the American Dental Association, the top nine foods that damage your teeth are hard candies, ice, citrus, coffee, dried fruit, potato chips, soda, alcohol, and sports drinks. Having said this, dental caries along with these food items can weaken your teeth structure causing them to be more likely to break when you are chewing hard food.
There can also be a crack on the tooth when subjecting teeth to extreme temperature swings, such as drinking a hot beverage immediately after having a bowl of ice cream.

What are the symptoms of a broken, cracked or chipped tooth?
ü?In most cases, the symptoms are usually clear when a tooth is broken or chipped as the broken part falls out or in your mouth.
ü?Pain that flares up after you bite down, sensitivity to hot or cold liquids, or feeling the chip or break with your tongue.?
ü?In some cases, people may crack a tooth without even realizing it. (This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to maintain regular dental checkups—your dentist can identify any damage to your teeth that has gone unnoticed in your daily life.)?
What should I do in an event of a broken tooth?
ü?Stop the bleeding, if present, by applying pressure and call for help if the bleeding is excessive
How do you repair broken teeth?
There are several ways a dentist can choose to treat a broken or chipped tooth, depending on how severe the damage is. Here are some of the options your dental professional may consider:
1.?????Dental bonding
Composite bonding is a way to repair chipped, cracked, decayed, discolored, misshapen, and teeth with gap. Composite bonding is a long-term treatment and can last up to 10 years. It is a minimally invasive procedure and anesthesia won’t be required unless bonding is being used for cavities.
?
Your teeth will be roughened and a conditioning liquid is applied on to them. Thereafter, composite is applied, molded, and smoothened. Then, an ultraviolet light is used to harden the composite. When the tooth bonding has dried, it will be shaped and polished to match the rest of the tooth.

2.?????Veneers
Veneers are external covers for a tooth. The veneer is bonded to the front of the tooth, transforming the tooth’s appearance. With good care, veneers can last up to 30 years, so you won’t have to worry about getting it replaced regularly.
?
Veneers can be put on a single tooth, to repair any breakage or can be put on multiple teeth to enhance the beauty of your smile. It is a wonderful cosmetic treatment option if you are looking to improve your teeth and smile. However, a word of caution is that if you grind your teeth, veneers may not be recommended for you because you will wear them down.

3.?????Crowns
Crowns are one of the most common restorative treatments. This option is usually advised when the tooth is broken or damaged to a greater extent and the patient experiences pain while chewing or drinking.
?
A dental crown is a cap that covers the tooth and protects in and improves the appearance. It acts as a strong covering for your tooth. By getting a crown, the dentist saves the teeth so that you don’t lose an otherwise sound tooth/root structure. Usually, crowns are preceded by RCT (root canal treatment) and is necessary when the patient experiences pain.
?
At Dr. RajatSachdeva’s dental clinic, we use crowns created from tooth-colored porcelain to create a natural, uniform look. Our crowns are created and customized for each patient and made to match the rest of the teeth perfectly.
?
4.?????Root canal treatment (RCT)
If the crack or breakage in the tooth has extended into the pulp, the tooth can be treated with a root canal. Sometimes after the root canal, a crown can be placed to protect the crack from spreading. Until then, the dentist gives a temporary crown to wear.
?
Getting a root canal involves clearing out the decayed tooth matter and removing the pulp of the tooth. Usually this procedure is thought to be painful but with the latest, state-of-the-art technology at our clinic, we not only make it a painless procedure but also with 100% success rate.
?
If you have a toothache, sensitivity, or swelling, you may need a root canal. Left untreated, infection can spread, causing abscess, bone loss, and other serious problems.
