Broadening Perspectives

When I think about relationships, I recognize the many shapes and forms relationships take. There can be great positive relationships, or negative relationships with toxicity and conflict. They can be quick connections with others to deep, meaningful and intimate exchanges. A relationship with a person can be daily or it may be sporadic – where you don’t see someone for many years and you pick up where you left off. Of course, a good relationship may even mean speaking a different language but communicating through forms more than just verbal - hugs, laughter, sign language, or just a smile.
This week as I travel I have reflected on the relationships in my life – the simple and the complex ones. Traveling in other parts of the world and expanding my relationships help me appreciate the importance and benefits in my life to connecting with all sorts of people around the world – whether I speak their language or not. Whether I see people daily, weekly, monthly, once a year or meeting someone for the first time, all these multi-form relationships expand my worldly knowledge, perspective, and compassion for others. Learning about other people’s stories, lives, families, challenges, successes, traditions, and cultures only makes me a better human being. It enhances my lens of the world and creates greater understanding for others.
A recent example of this is being in Mexico during the Day of the Dead celebrations. Meeting with some of my Mexican friends, I have gained deeper understanding of the meaning and importance of celebrating, remembering and praying for friends and family members who have died and help in support of their spiritual journey. It also keeps memories of loved ones alive in their hearts. I had the privilege of visiting the cemetery to witness music, food and celebration of past loved ones.
Talking with others and demonstrating general interest in their life strengthens the connection and relationship with others and provides greater benefits that one can imagine; investing time with others and gaining insights to expand my views and perspectives in my community and abroad makes me a more empathic person and leader – I am very grateful for the relationships in my life and I hope I never stop learning or being interested in others.
