broadCAST September 2019
Barry Lewis Green
Educator, Speaker, Coach, Writer, Creator ... advancing Character Leadership and Education ... to move forward together, stronger ... engaging change.
Last month, The broadCAST? explored magnificence and more. Back in July, we offered up thoughts on Dominion, Independence and more. This month, The broadCAST? speaks to the Fall and getting back it, in various ways. For many of us, this is a time of getting back to school, or getting back from Summer vacays and more.
- The broadCAST? is a monthly weigh in of thoughts and perspectives by our members of The broadCAST? Team. As noted so very many times in the past, " these wonderful people are independent experts in their own right, and I am humbly proud to say friends of mine. Here, they have an opportunity to share their earned insights, for you, each month. And, as we have said many times before, we encourage you to connect with these experts on their respective bodies of work and how they might be of service to you." Yes, think of The broadCAST? as a "news and views" letter ... intent on bringing value added and even fun to your life at work and beyond. Intended for educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders, it has something for everyone... and we encourage you to share it.
Let's Get at September
On Love in Action... JENNY DEARING says...
In my last Benny and Jarry post on The Long, Cool Road, I started in on a month around self care, if you will. I suggest a read of that post to start.
I am currently reading a Brene Brown book called Rising Strong. She is a phenomenal writer and I find myself relating to most of her writings. I have to say it is taking me a LONG time reading because of that thing we call life. I take all the moments I can spare to sit and read for a bit. But let’s be real, I also have a million other things that I want to do. Be lazy and watch Netflix, eat cheesecake, do my nails, hang with my boy, maybe just do absolutely nothing while scrolling through Pinterest. You know, all those important valid things. Which I think at times we need to do. I think it is a part of unwinding and letting ourselves breathe for a moment in time.
In Brene’s book she talks about doing the best that we can with what we know. I relate this to Child and Youth Care (which I am currently studying), and life in general. Brene talks about finding people ignorant or rude, or responding a certain way to something. At first, we look at the person like they have ten heads. Like maybe they are just jerks. That’s not the case. We are simply doing the best with what we are given. We are doing our best in life with our skills and knowledge.
This speaks to me on many levels. In society, as a parent, as a friend, as an employee, or with ourselves. I look at how I am to others. I love them, I love everyone really. I find the best in anyone and everyone. That is because I was raised that way. Raised to be kind, empathetic, compassionate, and respectful. That built a love and understanding within me that I use outward. I treat others with love because I was treated with love. It is my norm. But when it comes to taking moments to care for me, that isn’t so natural. I can’t exactly blame it on my upbringing, but it is more of a generational thing as far as I am concerned. I feel like moments of relaxing, taking a nap, going to a spa, or getting your hair done, may have been considered more of a selfish act. When really it isn’t. It is taking little moments to love yourself.
Love yourself. More to come in the Benny and Jarry blogs.
Jenny Dearing speaks to love in action. She brings talent, experience and learning around love, trauma and care. With a passion for Child and Youth Care and Addictions, and a background in same, she connects, and memorably so. On HR... TRACY CARBERRY says
What you do for one, you do for all! Life is not always black or white and neither is business... with that said, throughout my career I have seen many situations where personal judgement has played a major factor in deciding what actions are needed to move forward.
In some cases there were no guiding rules or policies to help navigate the situation however, there are other times where management will disregard the set guidelines and do what they see as the "right" thing based on the current events. While this can be a great and caring approach, I caution - it can also set a precedent for future situations whether management meant to or not.
So what is precedent? It's every action or decision made in the past, which sets the standard and culture for the future. Many legal outcomes are based on past precedent - the same stands for business. For example, if management allows one employee to misuse company equipment with little to no disciplinary actions and then terminates another employee for the same action - the terminated employee may have a case to fight for wrong doing based on past precedent. This could result in the employee getting their job back and/or the company having to pay the terminate employee for damages caused due to the termination. Either way, this could be avoided by consistency and understanding the importance of company precedent.
Furthermore, the importance of setting a good precedent is critical to building a positive culture and effective workplace. When a precedent is set employees clearly know what is expected of them and what management will and will not tolerate. Leading by example is the easiest way for management to set a strong precedent, and to enforce that there is one standard set for all!
Remember, the key to a solid precedent is consistency.

On Intuition... DOMINIQUE HURLEY says
Using the Law of Polarity to Your Advantage. What reality would you like to create this year in the school of life? Using the Law of Polarity to your advantage can help you manifest that. Let me explain as I share the lessons and mandala that resulted from my inquiry process into the Twelve Universal Laws.
Often, we get stuck where we are or spiral downwards because we're fixated on everything in our life that isn’t what we want it to be. Here’s how the Law of Polarity can help you change that around. We live in a dualistic world. It’s what makes existence possible. There’s no north without south, hot without cold, up without down, etc.
The beauty is that there’s a whole continuum of existence between those polar opposites. When you focus on the opposite of what you don’t want, you naturally start moving along the continuum towards what you do want.
Where attention goes, energy flows. If your thoughts aren’t serving you, think the opposite. If your actions aren’t serving you, do the opposite. So if your situation isn’t as you’d hoped for, don’t talk or think about everything you hate about it. Wallowing in complaints, gossip, or self-pity isn’t going to help you change things. Make a different choice. Start visioning and feeling the situation you want. Get on the escalator going the right way for your life of purpose & passion. This will help you tip the scale to that side of reality. Also, don’t criticize or condemn where you are right now. It’s what makes the opposite possible. In every problem lies the potential for a solution. In every ‘failure' is the seed for success. Learn from it. Grow from it. Use the Law of Polarity to your advantage. But don’t focus on the problem or failure. Just know that it holds the opportunity for the opposite. It’s up to you to explore and experience life to its fullest. If you don’t like where you’re standing on the continuum, make sure you’re heading in the right direction for you. You’ll naturally flow towards where you’re pointing. May this back-to-school offering help you be the conscious creator you were meant to be.
Note: To learn more about the symbolism or hear the Divine Storytelling Time intuitive reading (13 minutes ) that led to the creation of this Law of Polarity mandala, visit my website here.

On Entrepreneurship... JON BUTLER says
As you've likely heard before, "to move forward, sometimes you need to take a step back"...
In my August article, I wrote about launching a movement that was kickstarted by the ibuylocal Summer Sidewalk Showcase in downtown St. John's. As amazing as it was to be a part of, it was a lot of work to make happen, and filled with a ton of stress and struggles along the way. In the article, I also promised that "this Fall, we're going even bigger". That was mistake.
When I wrote that promise, I didn't realize the how drained I would be after the event. It was an interesting place, for me, both mentally and physically. What I wasn't ready for were the doubts that would start to creep in alongside the exhaustion... Were we headed in the right direction? Could we deliver on the big Fall event I was promising? Was it even what I wanted to do?
I decided to take a step back.
That step back gave me an opportunity to gather myself, reflect on what happened, and assess the questions I started asking myself. So, I stopped, caught my breath, and reminded myself why I was doing this, in the first place. We may be starting a movement, but it's not a race... Ok, I got it. I'm ready.
Now, it's time to get back at it.

On Social Media and Storytelling... HOLLY McCUE says
September, can be a hectic month for a lot of people.
- Parents, getting their children ready for back to school. Trying to get everything checked off the “to do” list, which somehow never seems to end.
- University students getting settled away for another busy semester.
- Business owners, getting ready for the shift in sales, the fall promotions and the holidays that are soon to follow.
But without routine and organization, things quickly fall apart. So this September, prioritize what matters most to you and Fall back into routine.
Basic Planning and Time Management Tips:
We have 168 hours total, in a week. Factor in 40 hours for sleep, and you’re left with 120 hours. So, how can you make the most of your time? Here's a bit of a grocery list.
- Decide your commitment
- Decide how much time your willing to commit to your work, and personal life.
- Create a list of priorities
- Create a weekly schedule
- Spend an hour mapping out your week, and decide what is to be done.
- Set a deadline
- Figure out how long each item will take, and hold yourself accountable.
- Create a checklist for each item.
- Limit Distractions
- Once you’ve created your schedule and deadlines, limit your distractions during working hours and personal time. Plan around phone calls, email responses and breaks. Keep your phone out of reach, until it’s break time!
- Declutter
- After settling back into your routine, you should have a good idea of what is no longer “serving” you or your business. Eliminate, and focus your energy elsewhere.
As a business owner, if you find managing your “day-to-day” operations and keeping a schedule of priorities in sync, challenging. There are online tools for you to take advantage of, so you can share with your team… And make sure everyone is on the same page. Here’s a couple project management tools, to have a look into for your business:
- Scoro, is a comprehensive solution that combines all the features you might need in project management software: projects & tasks, contact management, quotes, team collaboration, billing, and reporting.
- Proofhub, offers a replacement for conventional emailing and a bunch of other tools, integrating multiple project management features under one roof.
- Basecamp, is the preferred tool for thousands of project management teams, who enjoy its modern social media-like interface and carefree team collaboration features.
- Asana, combines elements of project management, file storage, and collaboration and helps to manage projects across a team without email.

On Creativity... JAMIE McCABE says
As the summer comes to an end, it’s time to get back at it. It’s September, and with that begins a new school year and I can’t help but feel the excitement right along side of the children as I too, return to school. Art school! Every year in September for one week. Yes, even us business owners and artist need to go back to school and learn new ideas, tips and tricks of the trade. This is a slower time of the year when I like to get my head back in the game after a summer of fun in the sun. I mean, I may have taken advantage of the summer a little more than I should have but now it’s time to put my head back in the colouring book. As school starts, so do all the new activities and programs. It’s time to start plugging in to that calendar on the fridge. (common I can’t be the only person who still uses these!?) Filling it in, color coding it and don’t forget the stickers! It’s like an art in itself planning that thing. Be sure to leave room for finding your inner artist in there. I am sure to come back from school with lots of new and exciting art ideas that you won’t want to miss! So put that on whatever calendar you use ;)
Jamie McCabe is all about creativity and connection. She is on a mission to bring people together through art and exploring their creative side at Clay Café Avalon. Jamie became an entrepreneur and opened the paint-your-own pottery studio in 2008 and has seen many memories painted there since then. She works with children and schools where she provides after school art programs. She believes we should color outside the lines more and embrace our inner artist. At Clay Café, it’s not about painting the perfect piece, it’s about painting the perfect memory. www.claycafeavalon.ca.
On Education... RAY HOLLISTER says
It’s finally happened. Summer break is officially over and done with and school is back in full swing. By now, most students are neck deep in getting back into the routines and habits of being a student.
Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a nervous student returning for her second year of college. She felt unprepared by what she perceived as the overwhelming amount of reading material she needed to read, study, and learn for her various classes. Does this sound familiar? This same scenario is repeated thousands of times for students of all grade ranges. I asked her what her main method of ‘studying’ or preparing for exams was and she replied that it was mostly reviewing text and highlighting important ‘testable’ material. Luckily, she had a couple of her textbooks from her previous semester and I asked her if she would show me an example of what she was talking about. When I saw what she had done – and had been doing – to prepare for her exams and ‘study’, I was both amused and relieved by what I saw. Amused because it is typical of what happens with many students, and relieved because the ‘fix’ is very simple and easy to implement.
What did she do? Well, the meme above is a shockingly accurate representation of one of her text books. It was so glaring, I actually posted that to Facebook (sorry, Mara!) as a tongue-in-cheek ‘study tip’ for students. What she had done was highlight virtually every word except for structural words (like ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘or’, ‘at’, etc…). Her page was virtually all light green (the color of her marker). Here’s the really challenging part; when you highlight everything except a few words of no consequence, your eye is attracted to those very words! In effect, you’ve made the ‘unimportant’ words stand out the most amongst all the ‘important’ information. Even worse, those words make absolutely no sense no matter how hard you ‘study’ them. Highlighting can be helpful, but as most of you have come to realize, everything is ‘testable’, so it doesn’t make much sense to highlight everything as you study your text.
I sat down with her and showed her how to make a subtle shift in her strategy of highlighting, and how to utilize the same time she spent reviewing and highlighting in the creation of a bullet-proof study guide that I call the ‘True Guide’. If you would like to learn how to create the ‘True Guide’ and end the frustration of using your text book as a coloring book, then I highly recommend checking out my book: “#thestruggleisreal: How To Turn Stressed-Out Students Into Stress-Free Scholars”, available now on Amazon.

On Communications... JOEL SWEENEY says
Here is the link to my instalment for September. The theme for this month's broadCAST is "getting back at it". I hope you had the opportunity during the past couple of months to enjoy some downtime. I took advantage of the time to reflect on my area of expertise which is oral communication, one on one or one on many. One thing that has stood out is our growing reliance of technology based communications. In many respects it has enhanced our communication effectiveness. In some respects society has embraced these new capabilities a little too aggressively to the detriment of our oral communication effectiveness. The key message here is to leverage oral communication more to grow effectiveness and build stronger relationships.
Joel Sweeney is all about effective communications. He has been speaking, training, coaching and writing about it for over 20 years. He is the author of The Wedding MC Handbook and Little Helpings of Food for Thought. His third book, The Speaker’s Tool Box – Perfecting the Craft of Speaking, was released in the 2015. He is the owner of Professionally Speaking (established in 1995). Joel helps entrepreneurs and business professional become effective, engaging and confident speakers. www.JoelSweeney.com.
On Youth, and Opportunity... WHITNEY and WILL say
This month, we welcome both Whitney and Will ... and The Opportunity Project. A few weeks back they launched a PODcast and this is one of the early episodes.
Engage and enjoy!
Hey there! I'm Whitney (Roberts), a student from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. I'm super involved in my Student Union and advocating for students. I'm also a creative (@wvartwork)...I have a passion for visual arts, fine arts, and more! However, my heart lies with community engagement and youth initiatives. I've worked with youth centres from a young age and found a passion for advocating for at-risk youth. For the past few years, I've worked with a national non-profit called Youth Centres Canada. I've had many titles since starting there but my main focus is the #Youth Magazine. I've learned so much about youth initiatives across Canada and engaged with so many individuals with similar passions! Recently, I've co-founded a non-profit organization entitled The Opportunity Project Youth Association (TOP for short). Our goal is to connect youth with opportunities to grow and develop their skills. We want to provide opportunities to youth so that they can succeed in this fast-paced world!
Will White began his journey of working with youth-serving organizations at the Youth 2000 Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Discovering a continuous need to do something bigger he began to search for opportunities to grow. Through this search, he joined groups such as the Youth Advisory Council for the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health, Young Canadians Round Table on Health and became a Telus Wise Ambassador. After 4 years as a Programs and Promotions Coordinator at the youth centre, Will made the difficult decision of taking a break from working directly with youth and shortly after was appointed as the CEO of Youth Centres Canada. He has since joined the Advisory on Youth Matters, served two one year terms on the Premiers Youth Council and most recently become accepted to the Constituency Youth Council for MP Scott Simms. He is excited to have embarked on a new venture, Co-Founding a national non-profit, The Opportunity Project Youth Association (TOP for short), which focuses on creating and advocating for opportunities for youth across Canada from employment to volunteer opportunities. Will’s core passions are youth mental health, digital literacy and youth engagement. He believes that every youth is a wealth of untapped potential and hopes to prove that to the world.

On Reverberations... TRENT LANGDON says
“Getting Back at It”…deep in the minds of teachers as we tidy up August and hit September. So as you enter a new school year, do you hit the road running or hold on to summer, kicking and screaming? In spite of your approach, a mindset that regular helps me prepare is that certain students may be there just to see me; this thought is certainly not egocentric in origin but rooted in respect for relationships. You are well aware that for some students, their summer reality has been 2 months of roaming their neighbourhoods without supervision, a schedule, or an adult that provides attention and accountability. There are some that will show their immediate happiness in seeing you while others will resist your efforts to reconnect. Either way, you are now once again the primary role model within their lives. This is a friendly reminder that the first day back may have much greater value than any of us will ever realize.
For 25 years, Trent Langdon has invested (and greatly appreciated his experience) in public education, youth care, and organizational governance. He is a nationally-certified school counsellor, teacher, and ‘peer-elected’ leader, promoting the human connection, integrity-based leadership, and the power of relationships. Trent works to build the personal identity, skill-set, and resilience of students, educators, community leaders, and professionals. On the Environmental... DAWN GOUGH says
This month I wanted to shed some light on one of the 3R’s of the well-known “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” trifecta – Reuse. I have been hearing more and more stories in the news and from friends about inventive ways that people are reusing items that would otherwise go into the trash, such as a local hardware store in Conception Bay South having reusable glass jars available for customers who are purchasing nails and screws.
I myself have many uses for glass jars, especially since glass is not accepted for curbside recycling on the Avalon peninsula. You can hand paint larger glass jars to make beautiful vases for flowers, make homemade fridge pickles, or use them for storing leftover soup. Glass does not see the garbage bin at my house.
I think that in previous generations, we had no choice but to reuse everything; it was a necessity of survival. Over time as a society we developed a disposable mindset, especially with the introduction of single-use products. I would love for us to get back to a reusable mindset, where we are making purchasing decisions based on reusability, and thinking twice before throwing something away.
I would love to hear about ways that you are reusing items that would otherwise be put in the trash. Use your creativity to find ways to make our world a greener one, because collectively we can have an impact!

On Character... BARRY LEWIS GREEN says
Getting back at it is real for me with the College year just starting. In our last Benny and Jarry blog, I started in on flow over drive. I recommend the read. I have started a journey with the launch of a beautiful, epic book for youth written by my "soul sis" LD Olsen. It is a labour of love. Labours of love are about flow over drive. They are aligned, and they feel thusly. We lose ourseves in them, and find ourselves in doing so. How do we find such. I suggest L.O.V.E. and Honor helps. Again, I sugeest a reda of that post. Ultimately, labours of love are not contrived. They arrive. They arrive by us being awake to our own sense of L.O.V.E.. When we know our strengths, we can be alert to opportunities that call fopr them, and we can have a much more clera vision of the impcat we can have... and then engage wholeheartedly.
We can find clues from our youth. For me personally, it was a passion for unity, character, music and meaning. Want to get back at it? Find your labours of love, and go wholehearted. It will help with meaning and simplicity.
