Britvic Rugby & 1st Choice Safety Training & Conultancy Case Study

Hi, my name is Pooja Odedra and I’m the Environment, Health and Safety Manager for Britvic plc at our Rugby site. This is a short case study of the work that we have carried out with the help of 1st Choice Safety training & Consultancy.?

How do we know of 1st Choice Safety???

I first began working with 1st Choice in my previous role at Crown Holdings, Inc. , Leicester. Their primary focus here was training and maintaining the sites Emergency Response Team. To enable them to deal with any incidents that may happen on site, 1st Choice trained the five response teams in everything from first aid & fire, through to confined space and working at height.??

What does partnering with 1st Choice Safety look like??

I moved to Britvic to be the EHS lead at their Rugby site and knew I wanted to continue to enlist the services of 1st Choice Safety in my new role.??

As a company, 1st Choice Safety have been exceptional in handling our many H&S needs, at a time that suits our company scheduling and in line with our company policies. We have found them incredibly helpful and very easy to work with.??

What are the benefits of working with 1st Choice Safety???

What sets 1st Choice apart in their field is that they are operated and staffed by individuals who have real frontline experience in public services. Many of the staff that have visited our site have been from the Fire or Ambulance services or a Military backgrounds.??

This brings with it authentic knowledge and a realistic training experience to everything they do. Often employing scenario based practical’s such as live fire, realistic wounds for first aid training and full sized spillage scenarios and incident command. They have also helped us with non-training projects, such as a Whole Site Fire Risk Assessment.??

One project that I’d specifically like to highlight, was in relation to our companies, STOP. THINK. ACT campaign of reducing workplace injuries due to fatigue. As a company, we’d recognised that most near misses and accidents were happening towards the end of shifts on nights. Along with the EHS? team, I held meetings with Scott Mathie , the MD of 1st Choice Safety, to discuss how we could utilise his experiences to meet our objectives. We planned and put together four Town Hall briefings that involved full site closures to focus on these issues. Scott delivered a presentation to all site staff, drawing on his experience gained from his time in the military and Fire Service, utilising photo and video examples for impact. These 30-minute presentations upheld Britvic EHS themes and educated the staff regarding fatigue, complacency and the effectiveness of rest periods. They delivered on the importance to carry out personal dynamic risk assessments and general risk assessment which overall helped us to deliver the ‘Stop, Think, Act’ campaign.??

Overall Summary?

We have been so impressed by the work of 1st Choice Safety, that the L&D Lead for Britvic GB, has asked for us to expand nationally what they do. 1st Choice are currently working towards this goal? with the project lead.??

So impressed am I with my experiences with 1st Choice, I have personally recommended to other other large industrial companies nearby and would not hesitate to do so to other companies looking for a forward thinking safety company to partner with. I look forward to working with 1st Choice Safety in the future for our training needs and future initiatives.??
