Brittle Nails

Brittle nails refer to nails that are fragile, weak, and prone to breaking, peeling, or splitting easily. This condition can be experienced by some women during menopause, and it is often attributed to hormonal changes and other factors related to ageing.

Here's how hormonal changes and other factors can contribute to brittle nails during menopause:

?

Hormonal fluctuations: Hormones play a role in maintaining the health and strength of nails. And I know I'm saying this for the twenty seventh time ?? but I can't assume just because your reading this post, you've read the previous twenty six, so here it is; During menopause there is a decline in oestrogen levels. Oestrogen helps promote collagen production, a protein that provides strength and resilience to nails. The decrease in oestrogen can lead to decreased collagen production, making the nails more susceptible to brittleness and breakage.

?

Nutrient deficiencies: Menopause can also coincide with age-related changes in nutrient absorption and metabolism, which can result in nutrient deficiencies. Essential nutrients like biotin, vitamins (such as B vitamins), and minerals (such as iron, zinc, and calcium) are vital for healthy nail growth and strength. Deficiencies in these nutrients can contribute to brittle nails.

?

Dryness and dehydration: Hormonal changes during menopause can affect the moisture balance in the body, including the nails. Reduced oestrogen levels can lead to decreased moisture retention, making the nails dry and brittle.

?

Weakened nail structure: Ageing and natural wear and tear can also affect the overall structure and integrity of the nails. Over time, the nails may become thinner, more fragile, and prone to breakage.

?

Common characteristics of brittle nails during menopause may include:

?

  • Nails that easily chip, break, or split
  • Peeling or flaking of the nail layers
  • Rough or uneven nail texture
  • Slow nail growth
  • Nails that appear thin or translucent
  • Increased susceptibility to nail infections

Managing brittle nails during menopause:

Maintain nail hygiene: Keep your nails clean and dry to minimise the risk of fungal or bacterial infections. Avoid excessive moisture exposure, such as prolonged contact with water or harsh chemicals, as it can further weaken the nails.

?

Use moisturisers and nail treatments: Apply moisturising creams or lotions to your nails and cuticles to help retain moisture. Consider using nail treatments that contain ingredients like biotin, keratin, or strengthening agents to improve nail resilience and reduce brittleness.

?

Protect your nails: Wear gloves when performing household chores or activities that involve contact with harsh chemicals or prolonged water exposure. This can help prevent damage and dehydration of the nails.

?

Maintain a balanced diet: Consume a nutritious diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein to support nail health. Include foods like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and sources of biotin (e.g., eggs, nuts, and seeds) in your diet.

?

Consider supplements: If you suspect nutrient deficiencies, consult with your healthcare provider, GP or a registered dietitian to assess your nutritional needs. They may recommend supplements to address specific nutrient deficiencies that could be contributing to brittle nails.

?

Protect and strengthen nails with nail care products: Use nail polishes that contain strengthening or protective formulas. These products can provide an extra layer of support to brittle nails and minimise breakage.

?

Consult a healthcare professional: If you're experiencing persistent or severe nail problems, consult with a dermatologist or a healthcare professional who specialises in nail health. They can evaluate your specific condition and provide further guidance or treatment options.

?

Remember, it's important to be patient as nail health improvements may take time. Consistency in implementing good nail care practices and addressing underlying factors can help restore strength and resilience to brittle nails.
