Brisbane Day Surgery Successfully Diverts 500KG of Medical Recyclables

Brisbane Day Surgery has successfully diverted 500kg of medical recyclables. In acknowledgement of?#CleanUpAustraliaDayForBusiness,?Brisbane Day Surgery's CEO/Director of Nursing, Simone Hamilton,?shares the hospital's progress and experiences since launching its new recycling program in partnership with?CircMed.

Brisbane Day Surgery has started with a small number of the possible initiatives supported by CircMed, directing their focus on recycling hard and soft plastics.

Simone has also highlighted that the facility has been researching ways to recycle copper wires currently found in diathermy pads.

"There is a significant decrease in our landfill waste. We are recycling a large number of hard/soft plastics, specifically healthcare-related products in addition to BCC plastic/commingled recycling."

“With the current volumes of medical waste produced nationally, this initiative by Circmed paved the way to significantly reducing its current carbon footprint.”

Danielle Munro has also advised that CircMed will be launching its first closed-loop product this year, a medical waste bag.

This process involves medical waste bags being used by the facilities being recycled and collected by CircMed. They are then treated and re-used in the manufacturing process to reproduce medical waste bags that will be, once again, utilised by the facilities.

Closed-loop recycling aims for products to be reused indefinitely, which contrasts with current manufacturing processes where products are commonly tossed once fulfilling their purpose of use.
